The Quest (18) (Jean-Claude Van Dammc. US. 1996) Jean-Claude Van Damme. Roger Moore. James Remar. 95 mins. Van Damme directs this period adventure yarn and stars as a Fagin-like street entertainer unexpectedly finds himself on a boat in the South China Seas under the command of gentlemanly English pirate Moore. The skull and crossbones elements are pushed aside. however. so that our hero can kickbox his way through a Tibetan fighting tournament. Big on crowd scenes and spectacle; low on intelligence. The Quiet Room (PG) (Rolf de Heer. Australia/Italy. 1996) 91 mins. De Heer's follow-up to Bad Boy Bub/2y also tells its story from an innocent‘s point-of-view. but this time the focus is on a seven-year-old girl as she watches her parents' marriage disintegrate. Although she has withdrawn into herself and refuses to speak. we hear her thoughts as a voice-over. A special screening (on Sat 19 Jul) is followed by a discussion organised by Family Mediation Scotland on the subject ofchildren and divorce. Edinburgh: liilmhouse.

McKellen gives a commanding performance amidst some wonderful supporting turns. while Loncraine ensures that the bard has rarely been treated in such
splendidly cinematic terms. The fascistic
