Scully managed The Grateful Dead for twenty years until 1985 and, together with rock biographer Dalton, recreates the literal sex, drugs and rock 'n’ roll lifestyle in print. Excess is evident, the anecdotes are silly and surreal but. overwhelmingly this is an stirring fairytale. (SM)
Leonard Bernstein Meryle Secrest (Bloomsbury £14.99) * sir
While no one would deny the talent of Bernstein as conductor and composer, this biography detracts greatly from his brilliance by attempting to inflate common human traits and reinterpret them as significant contributing factors to a complex character. This, plus a tendency to dwell on quite trivial detail, fails an otherwise comprehensive and well-structured portrait. (SM)
Light Fantastic

For the theatrically-inclined, Light Fantastic is essential reading. For mere mortals it’s thoroughly recommended. The son of a clown and chorus girl, playwright and critic Lahr combines review, anecdote and analysis in essays. Covering comedians, playwright, musicals and productions, the selection is populist but popular, the approach unpretentious. (SM)

Until Schindler's List, Spielberg was seen as little more than a man with a canny knack for creating box-office busting family thrills 'n' Spills movies. If Yule is to be believed, Spielberg is a thoroughly nasty piece of work, willing to stamp on anyone who threatens his domain — a characteristic the author believes possibly stems from an unhappy childhood.
