The Hillsborough Justice Concert
The death of 96 people at the Sheffield football stadium in 1989 is still a political issue. ‘You would expect those responsible to get down on their knees and beg forgiveness,’ writes Crackers creator Jimmy McGovern on the sleeve notes of a new CD in aid of the Hillsborough Family Support Group. ’They didn’t. They lied and Spread vicious propaganda.’ On 10 May this year, The Hillsborough Justice Concert was staged at Anfield, home of Liverpool FC. Among those appearing were the Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics (pictured), Dodgy, Space, The Beautiful South and The Lightning Seeds, with John Peel as MC. The new album is a recording of the concert, culminating in a collective rendition of the Rodgers and Hammerstein anthem ’You’ll Never Walk Alone’, from which it takes its title. As you’d expect, not a dry eye in the stadium.
You’ll Never Walk Alone: The Hillsborough Justice Concert is out now on V2. All record companies, artists and publishers have donated all monies to the Hillsborough Family Support Group. Stereophonics play T in the Park on Sat 72 July.
West End Festival
Summer solstice is approaching and in Glasgow there’ll be dancing in the steets. At the first ever West End Festival last year, the midsummer carnival parade was a blazineg colourful highlight. This year, over 20,000 revellers are expected to be jumping to the rhythm of the drums. ’Participation is what this festival is all about,’ asserts director Michael Dale. Some 180 music, theatre, comedy art and science events take place in over 50 venues, including open-air sites. Peaceful moments are available, but for noise and frivolity try the Partick Beat Workshop (Sat 14), the Open-Air Ceilidh (Sat 14) or Bruce Morton’s Summertime Stand-Up 2 (Fri 20). For sheer spectacle and a beat to rival Notting Hill, the carnival is where it’s at. Bands in masks and costumes on a Heaven and Hell theme lead steel bands to a party in Kelvingrove Park. Dancing with devils en route is highly probable. (Helen Terry)
The West End Festival runs in the West End of Glasgow, Fri l3—Sun 29 Jun. The Midsummer Carnival Parade is on Sun 22. Call 0747 357 6838 for details.
