The Empire Strikes Back is caught between reintroducing the popular elements of the original while setting up the context for the climax. As such. the story itself doesn‘t move on greatly. btit the tone is somewhat darker. The effects were considerably advanced by this stage and. of course. are even snazzier in this special edition. The director himself looks distinctly pained when he sings his number. but ltis discomfort is nothing compared with ours when Julia Roberts opens her mouth to sing ‘All My Life‘. Featuring a female-dominated cast. a mouth-wateri ng visual banquet of colourful symbolism and a tender. honest performance from Swinton. this is very much an empowering women‘s film. Him is centered around a single situation — a lover's ultimatum — illustrated through three separate stories. Amusing cameo appearances from Hartley regulars titillate the attdience. while the rhythmic dialogue. tightly choreographed action and colourful characterisation inject the film with the director's distinctive vibrancy.
