I Grosvenor Ashton Lane. 339 4298. A firm favourite with students. The big red seats are comfy and the booking policy is on the commercial side of arthouse.

I Filmhouse 88 Lothittn Road. 22. 2688. The pick of the arthouse circttit. Screen 1 is by far the best appointed in town and the new Screen 3 is well worth a visit.
Best deal: Fri matinees: all tickets £1.20. Best concession: Sun—Thurs tnatinees £1.50.

I The Attic [)yer's Close. Cowgate. 225 8382. Upstairs from Legends. this recently renovated gig-space-cum-club is probably the best place to catch the up- and-coming local talent and the smaller touring bands. The emphasis is mainly. although not exclusively. on scuzzy guitar bands and it's frotn here that the recently—signed Magicdrive first poked their tousled heads. Gigs are usually around £2 and hardly ever more than £3. I Henry’s Cellar Bar 8a Morrison Street. 221 1288. More late licence shenanigans at Henry‘s with live bands on almost every night from around 10pm until closing time at around 2-3am.

I Songwriters’ Showcase Tron Tavern. Hunter Square. Information: 661 5275. livery Tuesday at 8.30pm the Tron fills up with a diverse bunch of musicians all eager to prove their talents in front of a supportive crowd of fellow singers/ songwriters and non-musos. As you might expect. the range of styles and skill on offer varies dramatically. but for every bunt note there's a golden chord. You never know. you could be the first to see the new Alanis Morissette. All it costs is £1.
I Whistle Binkies o Niddry Street. 557 5114. Dark. dimly-lit and blessed with cave-like little siderooms. Whistle Binkies has long been a favourite with Edinburgh's drinkers. not least on account of its 3am closing time. Late drinking is good; late drinking with live music is even better. and this joint has seen some hell/.apoppin‘ evenings. Folk. country. pop and rock all get a look in seven nights a week and it's free to get in.
