Jim Byers bows down and gets his nose dirty in homage to the living house legend that is Tony Humphries.
Name Tony Humphries. Age 39.
Born Brooklyn, New York.
Occupation One of the greatest, most respected house DJs on the planet. Before that, he was a journalist at the New York Daily News and before that, a lowly mobile DJ.
I suppose he's one of these ‘godfathers of house' is he? Tony Humphries is one of the first-generation DJs, who helped make the transition from disco to house in the late 70s and early 805.
So what's new? We heard that one before. Big Tony (or ’The Humph‘ as he seems to be known as in Edinburgh at the moment) was a DJ before this house thing started. Only back then, he and others (like Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan and Ron Hardy) were playing a mix of Salsoul, Phin International, disco and alternative rock. At the time, it never had a name, they just played good music.
So what changed? It's a long story, but let’s just say that a few American blokes in New York and Chicago had something to do with it.
So why all the fuss now? Doh! Haven't you heard? The Humph is playing in Edinburgh soon and this may be your first and last chance to hear the great man at work.
But isn't he just another one of these overrated, overpaid, over-here American 015 trading on his past reputation? Whoah, steady! The Humph is your original 'DJ's DJ’ and one of the few 'Irving legends' who can actually mix properly. You don't mess with Humphries, man. Remember, he was resident at the legendary Zanzibar in New Jersey and The Shelter in New York, not to mention The Ministry for a while in the early 905. Anyone who has ever had the privilege of hearing him play says he’s the proverbial 'shit’.
So it's a bit of a big night then? It doesn't get much bigger than this baby. The Humph at The Honeycomb? Unbelievable.

HARRI
Harri has been at the heart of the Scottish house music scene since the late 805. He is currently resident at Subculture, on Saturdays at the Sub Club, Glasgow and at Plastic People on Fridays in London. He also guests at clubs all over the UK and Europe. Style- wise, he is best known for digging a deep, spiritual, Detroit-influenced housey-techno groove, distinguished by large basslines and sharp percussion. He also produces tracks for various labels, most recently as the H Foundation.
