Club News
The column that brings you the news, views, rumours and gossip.
NEW RECORDS to watch out for include the new and much- anticipated debut album on Soma from Funk D'Void; Saturday night Sub Club resident Domenic Capello’s new 12in also on Soma; Pure resident Brainstorm’s new album and Kevin Mckay's new Glasgow Underground 12in (recorded with 168). Looking ahead, there's news that the East Coast Project are getting near to releasing their second compilation, featuring some familiar names but some new ones too. Rumours of a serious, major label bidding war over the latest Burger Queen tune are as yet unconfirmed but suggest that a large amount of money is heading their way.
CLUB-WISE, apart from Tony Humphries in Edinburgh, other big buzzes centre on the Idjut Boys at The Apartment in Glasgow on May 4 and the third birthday of the Saturday night at the Sub Club. Club birthdays also approach for both Solefusion and Taste in Edinburgh, so expect something special from those lot. Elsewhere, Fire Island are to stage a major event at Studio 24 to tie in with London's Gay Pride festival and The Venue looks set to host a regular lesbian night with all female staff and no men allowed. Drum 'n' bass fans will be pleased to hear that Manga have got Roni Size
Sub Club resident and Soma recording artist Funk D'Void
and his full Reprazent show up in June. And anyone with a car or enough enthusiasm might be interested to know that Derrick May, Marshall Jefferson, Robert Owens and Todd Terry are all appearing on the same night at the soon-to-be-open Room At The Top club in Bathgate. That's in June as well.
In the meantime, the Solefusion/In Demand Records lot are starting a new monthly Saturday night at La Belle Angele from the end of May and both The Attic and The Liquid Room are now up and running, all of which gives Edinburgh's clubbers a bit more option than they're used to. And are Saturday nights at The Honeycomb set to change slightly soon? Watch this space. (Jim Byers)
