Toy Story (PG) (John Lasseter. US. 1995) With the voices of Tom Hanks. Tim Allen. Don Rickles. 8| mins. It isn‘t just the state-of-the-art images that distinguish Disney‘s first computer-generated animation feature. it's got a cracking adventure story too. A tale of friendship and self-belief combined with an exciting rescue and against-the-clock tension. Toy Story is sprinkled with comic asides. The kingpin of a traveller community (Harris) falls in love with and marries a beautiful young woman. but she absconds with her lover and their wedding booty. and amiable market stall trader Trojan Eddie (Rea) is held responsible. Mackinnon never loses his grip on the subject. and his handling brings a mythic resonance to the tale. The acting is wonderful. with Harris in particular a commanding presence. Twelfth Night (U) (Trevor Nunn. UK. 1996) Imogen Stubbs. Helena Bonham Caner. Nigel Hawthorne. 135 mins. There's a dark cloud hanging over the happy ending in this splendid Shakespeare adaptation by ex-RSC top man Nunn. The farcical action brought about by the cross- dressing plot never loses sight of the pain at its core. and the joke on Malvolio (Hawthorne) has a cruel edge. Performances are excellent. with Ben Kingsley an inspired choice. brining weight to the role of the fool Feste. Stirling: MacRobert Arts Centre. Unforgiven (15) (Clint Eastwood. US. 1992) Clint Eastwood. Gene Hackman. Morgan Freeman. 123 mins. Clint returns to the saddle as a former killer. tamed by his late wife. but pressed into joining a bounty hunt which takes him to the town of Big Whiskey and into the presence of

Whisky Galore (PG) (Alexander Mackendrick. UK. 1949) Basil Radl'ord. Joan Greenwood. Jean Cadell. 82 mins. Much-loved filling comedy by the late Sandy Mackendrick. A ship carrying a cargo of whisky is shipwrecked off a Scottish island during wartime. so the locals decide it's time to wet their thirst. Full of wit and charm that others can only hope to emulate. Edinburgh: Cameo.
The Wind In The Willows (U) (Terry Jones. UK. 1996) Terry Jones. Eric Idle. Steve Coogan. 88 mins. When Mole‘s home is destroyed by weasel property developers. he enlists the help of Rat. Badger and egotistical Toad to uncover a conspiracy. Jones's Pythoii-for-kids adaptation of the classic novel is a tad self-indulgent. with some awful songs and lacklustre pacing. However. the characters and atmosphere will probably charm a younger audience not yet into their more cynical teens. Kirkcaldy: ABC.

A horror movie that retains a distinctiver European poetic quality.
