Farmer came out of the classic bop era (most famously in the Jazztet with Benny Golson). but has evolved a style which is strong but very subtle. and depends on musicality rather than muscle-power for its impact. He plays two central belt gigs with different trios this week. starting tonight with the Kenny Stewart Trio. in which the pianist - and it is good to see him back in regular action — isjoined by Ricky Steele (bass) and John Rae (drums). I Jazz 'n' Dance: A Tribute to Alex Dalgleish Plaza Ballroom. Victoria Road. 423 3077. 7.30pm—midnight. £3.50 in advance from the venue or Ticket Centre (227 551 I). or £4.50 on door.
