humanity on all sides. What impresses most.

The NBA meets Who Framed Roger Rah/ill." as America's most famous sportsman. basketball star Michael Jordan. is zapped off to help Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes characters beat a bunch of aliens. The real life/cartoon interaction is as fun as ever. but the overall appeal is limited. given the more marginalised nature of the sport over here. The eighth and most impressive instalment in the series gives the Next Generation crew a chance to be fully centrestage. A brooding Captain Picard (Stewart) leads the fight against the half-flesh. half-machine Borg. who are intent on attacking Earth and changing history. In Verhoeven's hugely expensive rollercoaster of violence. Arnie plays a construction worker whose vacational fantasy (implanted by Rekall Incorporated) is to pitch him into a netherworld of assassins andfenmiesfirm/es before unleashing the full truth about his nightmares of life on Mars. The crazy Dutchman's Martian chronicle. teeming with sicko incident. is powered along by bursts of gee-ain't-this- fun-brutality. but scores points for the playful ingenuity of the plotting. and Arnie looks like he's enjoying himself. A tale of friendship and self-belief combined with an exciting rescue and against-the-clock tension. Toy Story is sprinkled with comic asides. Prolific US indie actor Buscemi comes up trumps in front of and behind the camera in this carefully detailed. charactendriven movie that‘s more Cassavettes than Tarantino. It‘s to Buscemi's credit as actor. writer and director that he encourages such sympathy for his barfly loser. whose self-pitying journey through (low) life is funny and unsentimentaI.The greatest. most phenomenal. small. unassuming film you're likely to see all year. 12 Monkeys (15) (Terry Gilliam. US. 1995) Bnice Willis. Brad Pitt. Madeleine Stowe. 129 mins. A convict from the future is sent to the past to discover the source of a lethal virus that has devastated humanity. but even he begins to wonder if the images in his head are merely delusions. A complex time- travel fantasy, with liberal subplots and a decent mystery edge. that's lifted by Gilliam's ever~brilliant visual skills. It may at times stumble over its own inner logic. but it's an odd. eccentric creation that engages the imagination. Edinburgh: Cameo.
Two Days In The Valley (15) (John Herzfeld. US. 1996) Danny Aiello. Jeff Daniels. James Spader. 100 mins. Assassination, double-cross. kidnapping. murder — multiple characters pitch up for this modest. old-fashioned but perfectly enjoyable movie that's filled with disarming performances. Aiello's touching study in clawed-back dignity tops the bill. Edinburgh: Cameo.
The Unbearable lightness Of Being (18) (Philip Kaufman. US. 1987) Daniel Day- Lewis. Juliette Binoche. Lena Olin. 167 mins. Ambitious adaptation of Milan Kundera's complex novel about a womanising Czech brain surgeon who falls in love for the first time with a doe-like small-town beauty at the time of the Russian invasion of 1968. A dawdling and rather austere narrative is given some spice and interest by an overwhelming eroticism. a beautifully judged evocation of Prague and gorgeous photography. Edinburgh: Cameo. The Van (15) (Stephen Frears. Ireland/UK, I996) Colm Meaney. Donal O‘Kelly. Ger Ryan. 105 mins. The final instalment in the big screen treatment of Roddy Doyle's Barrytown triology is much darker and less funny than fans of The Commitments and The Snapper might expect. Concentrating on the tensions that grow between two men who go into the fast-food business. it's really a serious look at male mid-life crisis and long-term unemployment. Meaney sparkles once again. but overall the swearing becomes intrusive. the drama lacks a punch and the pace is faulty. St Andrews The White Balloon (U) (Jafar Panahi. Iran. I995) Aida Mohammadkbani, Mohsen Kafili. Fereshteh Sadr Orfani. 84 mins. A young girl goes to the market to buy a goldfish. but loses her money on the way. The material may be the most mundane of concerns. but this film. which unfolds in real time, is as nerve-wracking as any Hitchcock thriller. With its truth to detail. stylistic simplicity and wonderful depiction of innocence and purity. it reawakens faith in the medium of cinema. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
The Wind In The Willows (U) (Terry Jones. UK. 1996) Terry Jones. Eric Idle. Steve Coogan. 88 mins. When Mole's home is destroyed by weasel property developers. he enlists the help of Rat. Badger and egotistical Toad to uncover a conspiracy. Jones's Python-for-kids adaptation of the classic novel is a tad self-indulgent. with some awful songs and lacklustre pacing. However, the characters and atmosphere will probably charm a younger audience not yet into their more cynical teens. Kilmarnock.
