I ‘l’hat’ll be the Bush Records, ‘hed’ single series have clarlte then? No that would be the Dave Clark who was formerly a key member of State Of Flux and is now signed to R&S’s splinter label Generations, calling himself Sparky. Other artists putting material out on this label include Juan Atkins, Carl Craig and Kenny Larkin. Illustrious company indeed.
I State or Flux rings a bell. What was that about then? The band (comprising Clark. Roger Elliot and Graeme Slater) had five releases in all between I993 and I995, on labels such as T&B and Finiflex. Their biggest release, ‘The News’ ,is now on its fourth outing, this time on a German Sony offshoot.
I Why did the hand split up? Clark felt the music they were producing wasn‘t experimental enough. He describes his current output as ‘absolute techno. no messing about, faithful to the Detroit sound.’ While the State Of Flux work was more musical. Sparky explores the rhythmic and percussive elements of techno.
I Was he always so into techno? Oh no, when he stayed in York he played drums in a number of bands including embryonic versions of Shed 7. He is still a drummer at heart, which is easily- recognisable in his new work.
I Is he working on anything else? As well as Sparky. Clark has started a multimedia company to write music for computer games, most notably top Glasgow-based game designers Red Lemon. He’s working on the musical stab that will accompany all the games plus two hush-hush projects that can't be mentioned for corporate security reasons.
The Sparky ‘As You Like It EP' is out on Generations now.
