The Stalker’s Apprentice (Scottish) With Scottish Television's new drama series Mc'CaIlum starring John Hannah up and running next week. shooting is due to start in Glasgow in March on an adaptation of novelist M. S.
Power's psychological thriller.
Morvern Callar (BBC Scotland) After the success of The Crow Raad. BBC Scotland is developing an adaptation of Alan Wamer’s debut novel Marvem Callar. about a feisty Oban raver who heads for Spain after her boyfriend commits suicide. if the stars align in the right constellation. the project could end up as a feature length drama with a cinema release.
Helen Baxendale: suited tor the role
The Phil Kay Show (Channel 4) After numerous attempts to develop a TV format which does Scottish comedian Phil Kay’s hyper-active live shows justice. Channel 4 reckons it‘s cracked the problem. No details as yet. and even the show name might change. but this could be Kay‘s big break.
An Unsuitable Job For A Woman (lTV) After rising to the status of magazine cover star (see last month‘s GQ). Helen Baxendale has given up playing doctors and nurses in Cardiac Arrest to play P. D. James‘s detective Cordelia Gray in a new series shooting in spring. Baxendale was gaining a reputation as an actress who was cast in kit-off parts (Truth 02' Dare. Crossing The Floor) but this major lTV drama will take her to a family audience.
The Missing Postman (BBC2) Likely Lad James Bolam plays a postman who teams up with Scottish singer Barbara Dickson as an Arran landlady. in this two-part comedy drama from BBC Scotland. When the postie is made redundant. he decides to deliver a last round of letters by bike across the UK.
Bombay Blue (Channel 4) From the producer of Hamish Mather/r, comes this new cop drama about Strathclyde‘s only Punjabi policeman who travels to lndia in the line of duty. The six-parter stars newcomer Shan Khan as Glasgow Detective Constable Arun Gosht and was filmed mainly on location in Bombay.
Channel 5 After delaying the launch to allow more video recorders to be retuned. the UK‘s first new terrestrial channel since l982 is preparing to go on air in March. A handful of Scottish faces will be on screen. including former BBC Scotland news journalist Kirsty Young. the nightly news anchor who is being promoted as the ‘face of Channel 5‘. Also in the C5 chair — or couch at any rate — is Absolute/vs Jack Docherty who hosts his own nightly chatshow.
Melissa (Channel 4) On the back of his excellent TV debut Guardians. a single drama which slipped out rather unnoticed in Channel 4's 7alerrtsputring season last year. Scottish filmmaker Bill Anderson landed the prestigious job of directing Alan Bleasdale's new six-parter rile/issa. Based on a Francis Durbridge thriller. it stars Jennifer Ehle (Pride And Prejuidir'e) as a mysterious and menacing woman who seduces Adrian Dunbar.
Face (BBCl ) Catching the Britpop/art/mrwie wave which enabled Trainspotting and Turner Prize-winning artist Damien Hirst to be mentioned in the same breath. comes this .S't'reen ()ne drama starring Robert ‘Begbie‘ Carlyle and Blur singer Damon Albarn. Carlyle is the bank-robber and face about town who is double-crossed by his mates. The film reunites Carlyle with filmmaker Antonia Bird who previously directed the Scottish actor in Safe and Priest. Catherine Yass (Portfolio. Edinburgh. 22 Feb—25 Mar) The photographer extraordinaire and the maker of back-lit images of meat markets and factories has a solo show.
MB (Feb) Duo Scullion and Dalziel liven-up the Glasgow/Edinburgh motorway with a whopping piece of public art: a giant horn that emits the sound of a big brass band.

Works From Gabrielle Keiller Bequest (Scottish National Gallery Of Modern Art. Edinburgh. Jul—Sept) The last great Surrealist art collector donated her prize collection of works by Bacon. Magritte. Duchamp and Dalr’ recently to the National Galleries. Here it gets its first public showing.
Birth Of Impressionism (McLellan Galleries. Glasgow. 22 May—7 Sept) The early years of Monet and his artist chums. who blasted the Parisian art scene with their one-time controversial art style. make a group showing. Degree Shows (Edinburgh College Of Art and Glasgow School Of Art. Jun) The young things show their creations — a great chance not just to eye up future names but also to make a few purchases.
Stills Gallery (Edinburgh. Aug) After a year off the circuit due to a major revamp. Stills re-enters the art scene with a new improved space and cafe styled in part by artist Nathan Coley. (Susanna Beaumont)
Rez (lngliston. 22 Mar) The Rezerection team puts together another of its mammoth all nighters at The Royal Highland Centre with almost 30 DJs and live acts including the talents of the mighty Lenny Dee of New York. Basement laxx Felix and Simon finally make it up to Glasgow at some point this year. after shelving their scheduled date last November. The pair are currently the hottest properties on the London deep house scene and are definitely worth the wait.

Glasgow at the end of March to headline the Tunnel's regular Cream night.
Sole Fusion Edinburgh's number one garage club links up with top London night Garage City. bringing residents Bobby and Steve up for the night at the end of March.
