Pulp: iuriousiy scribbling new songs as you read
T in the Park (Site TBC. July) Well. waddya know‘.’ it's happening for the fourth time and it‘ll be bigger. better. more bands. more choice. more entertainment. more fun and we’ll know more around the end of January. The List is producing the T in the Park guide again and our loyal readers will be the first to know when info is released.
The festival will no longer take place at Strathclyde Country Park as the council has development plans for the site. While no new site has been confirmed as yet. Lanarkshire Racecourse is a contender. As to the date. the weekend ofthe l3/l4 July is probable but could be brought forward a week depending upon band availability.
Oasis The two Gallagher‘s and cohorts are locked in a studio at present putting stage three of their world domination plan together. They had to move out of Abbey Road Studios. where they were recording their as yet unnamed third album. because of the amount of stories which were being leaked to the press. It’s hoped that a single will be released in the late spring and the album will follow later in the year. Assuming. of course. that Gallagher jnr. doesn‘t get banged up in the chokey after his brush with the boys in blue. Either way No Way Sis will happily plug the gap.
Blur Does anyone still care? The success of their forthcoming single. ‘Beetlebum‘. should be a
reasonable indicator of how the album. released in February. will do. Rumour has it that the album
is a somewhat dark affair that has lost much of Blur's recent cockney bounce. Sec preview and listings. U: The recent winners of Q‘s ‘Masters Of The Universe‘ or something award will be touring the UK this year and a trip north of the border is possible. Until then. their single ‘Discotheque’ comes out in February and should whet appetities for their album Pop. scheduled for release in March. Pulp Having spent a large part of I996 on the road. our polyester pop pals have retired to a studio in London to write some new material. They h0pe to hit the festival circuit in the summer
and fans can expect a new album later in l997.
Glasgow international Jazz Festival (Various venues. 27 Jun—6 Jul) Last year's was a vintage event. with the likes of McCoy Tyner. Betty Carter. Fourth World and the Mingus Big Band exemplifying the best in international
jazz. The usual stellar line-up is
expected again this year. plus important borne-based talent.
Edinburgh International Jazz Festival (Edinburgh. early Aug) The festival is in a state of
flux. and is currently the subject of a major review which will almost
certainly usher in both immediate
and long-term changes to its traditional and mainstreamjazz programming. Christy Moore (Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. 25—29 Mar) The lrish singer/songwriter starts a mammoth five day residency and we‘ve got an in- depth interview. Huzzah!
Erasure (SECC. Glasgow. IS Apr) After last November‘s ‘Tiny Tour'. which was practically a greatest hits package. fans can hear the beat boys bashing out the material from their new. as yet unnamed album. released in March.
Azlza Mustafa Zadeh (Queen‘s Hall. Edinburgh. 21 Feb: Henry Wood Hall. Glasgow. 22 Feb) Let‘s hope it’s second time lucky as the brilliant Azerbaijani jazz pianist tries again to make her postponed Scottish debut in Assembly Direct's Jazz Directions series.
Nanci Griffith And The Blue Moon Orchestra (Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. 25—28 Apr) The Texan singer returns with her full band. Nanci hails from down Lubbock way. and will also be joined by special guests The Crickets. the band which backed the town's most famous rocker. Buddy Holly.
lamiroquai (SECC. Glasgow. 9 Apr) The man with the funked-up plan and album sales of four squillion or thereabouts for Travelling Wit/mu! Moving brings his hat and his posse up North again.

Preview of the year
Cast (Barrowland. Glasgow. l/lO Apr; Meadowbank. Edinburgh. 12 Apr) New album and a fresh round of what seems like the never-ending tour from the Scousers. All being well. Meadowbank will become a frequently-used venue for the larger touring bands much like the Barrowland on the west coast. Osmo Vanska And The Sibelius Experience (Various venues. Glasgow. I/l3 Feb. 8 Mar. 16 Apr. l/lO May) Prepare to be amazed. not to mention have your preconceptions thrown out the window. as the brilliant Finnish conductor reveals his unique insights into the seven Sibelius symphonies with the BBC 880.
Music zoo (City Art Centre. Edinburgh. 8 Feb—l Jun) Billed as a celebration of 100 years of music and what came with it — the rise ofthe teenager. those swinging ()()s and the scientific discoveries that made it all possible. All courtesy of EM]. Samson and Delilah (Theatre Royal. Glasgow. 23/26 Apr. 7/10/29 May. 4 Jun; Festival Theatre. Edinburgh. 30 Apr. 3 May. 19/21 Jun) Scottish Opera mount their first ever production of Saint-Saens‘s dramatic opera. Perhaps someone should alert the guardians of public morals to this one. what with all that sex. violence. orgies. and wilful destruction of public property. Bit like an office party really.
