I I“ Derrick May
I Date or blrtllo April I963
I Ocean-flee DJ, producer. label boss, seminal Detroit techno master. I That’s me title, does he deserve it? He wrote the classic track ‘Strings of Life‘. a track so good that remixing it is widely regarded as blasphemy.
I lie! did he start? It all began at Belleville High School (Detroit) twenty years ago. Derrick met up with a schoolmate called Aaron Atkins who introduced him to the work of George Clinton.
I Autlle? My relation to Jean? Well you know the way these Phactfiles go. When Den'ick went to Aaron’s house to pick up a tape he had left there he found that his brother, Juan Atkins. had accidentally recorded over it with all sorts of new electronic music. Krafwerk and Gary Numan. Blown away by what he heard. he listened to it over and over again with another pupil of Belleville, the now equally legendary Kevin Saunderson.
I What happened next? Five years later. Juan Atkins was DJing and had taught Derrick the tricks of the trade. The pair went on to set up a sound system called Deep Space (with Eddie 'F'lashin’ Fowlkes) which played against the grain.
I All till? After a brief sojourn in Chicago, Derrick set up the hugely influential Transmat Records and began to put out the records he was ultimately to become best known for: ‘Strings of Life', ‘Nude Photo'. and tracks by artists such as Joey Beltram.
I That's quite a legacy Indeed. and it still hangs with him, making him reluctant to put records out now.
I Se Iblt is In delay Iitb mm Touring the European techno scene. and working on various ‘projects‘.
I Such as? Rumour has it that he is currently working for Sega - doing music for the games - which links in nicely with the only ‘real’ job he ever had when he worked in a video arcade aged nineteen.
