. ax -> s SLEEPEBS — the film — has rekindled the controversy surrounding writer Lorenzo Carcaterra‘s claim that the events in his source novel really happened. The story follows four friends from Hell‘s Kitchen. New York who are put in a brutal reform school when a childhood prank goes disastrously wrong. Years later. two of the boys shoot dead the warden who abused them. so the other two hatch a complex plan to have them found not guilty while exposing the horrors of the juvenile detention system. This gripping story enticed an all-star cast to sign up. Robert De N iro. Dustin Hoffman. Brad Pitt and Kevin Bacon all deliver brilliant performances. Regardless of the truth of the original material. director Barry Levinson reckons the film has important points to make. "This movre is not an indictment of the prison system.’ he stresses. ‘but it does question the unchecked power that is given to people who may abuse it. whether it’s in juvenile detention centres. mental hospitals or old age homes.‘
