With the emphasis iirrnly on the traditional, both books are steeped in Scottish culture, with each recipe accompanied by background inionnation. For instance, did you know that Flora McDonald was eating a ‘Flummery’ when arrested tor helping Bonnie Prince Charlie? Or that a certain Maggie Bridie sold her meat pies at local gatherings, and thus a pasty institution was born?
The books ieature easy to iollow instructions and carry illustrations throughout (be warned though, they tell it like it is - ‘Stewed liabbit’ comes complete with bunny picture).
Some oi the Cook recipes are slightly ambitious, so younger would-be cheis should head tor the Bake book, which is iull oi breads, sweets and cakes - periect ior Yuletide over indulgence.
