nary Weller dishes the dlrt on one or the tines! drum ’n’ bass creators on earth.

.. 2r. . .31 I Name? LTJ Bukem I Age? 27

I Place of Origin? Watford

I Occupatlon? DJ first and foremost for the past ten years. More recently he’s been known for his production work, for being head of the phenomenally successful drum ’n’ bass label Good Looking Records, and as a wearer of silver Tommy Hilfiger puffa jackets.

I l.'l’.l Bukem? Whassatabout then? The Bukem part comes from Hawaii Five-O. ‘Book him Dano’ was the line, and the name ‘Bukem’ stuck. The record company claim LTJ comes from the fact that he is ‘el DJ’. Other sources suggest it might stand for ‘light that joint’. as the man is known to like his smokes.

I So he’s not a phannaceutlcal man? Not really. He tends not to sleep much and gets his buzz from the crowd when he DJs.

I And does he I” a lot? By heck he does. Talking about a map that The Face printed showing his weekly spider web-like tour of the country, he says: ‘That’s shit, 1 do twice that, man’. But he loves it. Sleeve notes for his Logical Progression compilation describe him as ‘living, eating, sleeping and shitting music‘. I lies he always been so keen? With music yes, structure no. He used to hide in the bushes when being sent for piano lessons and faked his fingering on the keyboard for his blind teacher. At thirteen though, he found musical inspiration in jazz funk fusion session musician Nigel Crouch, who introduced him to the likes of Chick Corea. These early influences can be heard on the latest Good Looking records compilation Earth, which has tracks from his subsidiary labels, Looking Good, Nexus and Cookin Records. I And the silver putta jacket? Bit of a trademark with Bukem for a while. He bought it in Japan and wore it all the time. Now though he figures everyone c0pied him and he’s into the Diesel gear.

The Earth album is out on Good Looking records now.
