I The Secrets Of Mary King’s Close Revealed Mary King‘s Close. info: 624 7624. l2-5pm. £4. Over 5000 people went along to the historic close during the summer. The close became known as Edinburgh‘s most haunted street after it was abandoned following the last outbreak of the plague in 1645. Once a bustling 17th century Old Town close. the plague destroyed its reputation and was soon tagged as ‘deserted by all but the
powers of darkness.‘ Its remains are now entornbed beneath the City Chambers.

This is the sixth year in which Apple Day has been held nationally as part of the Earthward environmental campaign. There will be demonstrations of pruning. grafting and general maintenance of trees. a festival of rural crafts. and examples of the wide variety of apple-related recipes. Here’s a titbit to impress all and sundry - of the 5000 native apple types in existence. only nine are available commercially. Makes you think. doesn‘t it?

In recent years, Sri Chinmoy has played his free Peace Concerts to thousands in locations such as Prague, Montreal, Tokyo and Washington and held court with Mikhail Gorbachev, Mother Theresa and llelson Mandela. lie is also the inspiration behind the biannual Oneness-Home Peace Run and the Peace Blossom initiative in which significant sites around the world are dedicated to peace. Through his music, played on the flute, esrai, piano and cello, he aims to create an atmosphere in which the spirit of peace is almost tangible. This concert marks his first visit to Scotland in almost ten years with an estimated 5000 people

In a double whammy, the presenter of The Sky Af flight gives an afternoon lecture and an evening concert as part of the University of Strathclyde‘s Surfing The Universe 1996. The lecture, Into Space!, is a grand tour of the galaxy and beyond, with time available for questions. One of his lesser-known talents is as a composer, having written over 70 Viennese waltzes. For this concert, he will take the audience through a journey of his own works merged with space- related classics such as Strauss’s Also Spraclr Zarathustra, Ifolsf’s Mars & Jupiter
and Debussy’s Claire de lune.

The Crafts Alive bandwagon finally reaches Scotland with this three-day stopover at the SECC. 250 individual crafts artists will be displaying their wares including special demonstration areas for visitors to be shown the skills required.

Visitors will be able to see the latest in knitting and needlecraft skills transformed into stunning catwalk designs. There will also be lectures. workshops. competitions. book-signings. free draws and many special offers.

Guided by the zoo witch. no less. you will discover that humans have worshipped some animals for their magical powers and feared others as harbingers of doom and destruction. If you manage to get through all that then refuge and refreshment are available in the Monkey House. Not suitable for under IOS or those of a nervous disposition.
