Phactfile

.llm Byers spins the Phactfile wheel onthis Issqe’s dance-music makers.

I Name? Incognito.

I Age? It‘s fifteen years since the name Incognito first appeared on record with their debut album Jazz Funk.

I Who they? One of Britain’s most vibrant, successful R ’n’ 8 acts.

I What do they do Head Incognito bod Bluey Maunick and his cohorts produce a classic British version of soul. R ’n’ B, swing and vocal-based funk.

I Say what? You heard. Basically. they’re a cool funky bunch that deserve much respect.

I How come? Well. quite apart from being one of the best live acts around, Incognito also know a thing or two about the value of an astute remix.

I Tell me more. Like Jamiroquai (Morales mixes) or The Brand New Heavies (Graeme Park mixes) they know who to get in touch with when they need to add that authentic (and extremely lucrative) ‘banging club mix’ which goes down so well on the nation’s dancefloors.

I But what’s so special about that? Generally speaking, clubbers like nothing better than hearing mainstream chart stuff that has been reworked for the dancefloor.

I Why? It allows them to like songs that they wouldn‘t normally confess to liking. For example, recent unlikely artists who‘ve come out of the club remix smelling of roses are Simply Red ('Fairground’ by Rollo and Sister Bliss), Bobby Brown (‘Two Can Play That Game’ by K~Klass), Everything But The Girl (‘Missing’ by Todd Terry), Jamiroquai (“Space Cowboy’ by David Morales) or Janet Jackson (‘When I Think Of You' by Deep Dish)

I So what you’re saying is that all these people are rubbish without the hand of god treatment from the trendy club guys? Kind of, yeah. Nobody in any half-decent club really gives a toss about ginger bonce Mick Hucknall until he gets remixed by the likes of Rollo.

I So that's why Incognito are so successful then? Luckily for them, they’ve got the tunes to go with the cool remixers.

I llame some then. Try the awesome ‘Always There’ featuring Jocelyn Brown on vocals and the mighty Masters At Work on the mix. Or the timeless ‘Givin It Up’ with Roger Sanchez twiddling the right knobs. Or check the equally excellent new single ‘Out Of The Storm' with a blinding remix from Detroit’s Carl Craig. Incognito play the Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Sat 1 9 Oct, with special guest Courtney Pine.
