O'Sullivan's dramatic portrait of The Troubles shows the effect of the violence on ordinary people. as well as hinting at how the situation legitimises the actions of dangerous psychotics. The acting is strong. while the mood has a tense inevitability. See preview and review. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I The Mt, Professor (12) (Tom Shadyac. US. 1996) Eddie Murphy. Jada Pinkett. James Cobum. 95 mins. Stealing the plot from the Jetty Lewis vehicle. this Jekyll-and-Hyde variation has Murphy in a variety of roles. Principally. he‘s overweight but sweet scientist Sherman Klump. who comes up with a formula that shrinks him to sexy but egotistical Buddy Love. Unfortunately. he often reverts to gross size at inopertune moments. The make-up is good. but the fart level of humour is way too simplistic. General release. I One More Kiss And lle’s Dead (15) (Hans- Christoph Blumenberg. Germany. 1995) 82 mins. At the UFA studios in the 30s. once Wilder and Lubitsch had gone to Hollywood. the sophisticated comedies of Reinhold Schunzel were all the rage. Now he's pretty much forgotten. UK. 1965) Christopher Lee. Barbara Shelley. Richard Pasco. 92 mins. Hammer gave Lee a welcome break from sundry Frankenstein‘s monsters and Draculas. and he responded with a lusty. full-bloodied rendition of the sinster and charismatic Russian oddity. dies. the female members of the Dashwood famin face a precarious future which complicates the romances of sensible Elinor (Thompson) and emotive Marianne (Winslet). Thompson's adaptation keeps the wordplay engaginly tart and sharp-witted. but never loses sight of the powerful frustrations sinunering beneath the surface. Infinitely more satisfying than your typical fluffy period piece. Central: MacRobert. I Seveeus) (David Fincher. US. 1995) Brad Pitt. Morgan Freeman. Gwyneth Paltrow. 127 mins. The outline is familiar — two cops track down a serial killer - but Seven is a step ahead of its rivals. From its opening title sequence onwards. it's an extremely dark movie which winds through the most twisted recesses of human nature. Each death is a graphic interpretation of one of the seven deadly sins. giving Alien 3 director Fincher the material for an intense stylistic exercise in horror. Fife: New Picture House. I Strait (15) (Gordon Parks. US. 1971) Richard Roundtree. Moses Gunn. Charles Cioffi. 100 mins. Not really as blaxploitative as it‘s reckoned to be. this hardboiled private eye thriller has a decent cast. a tight plot. and that cool Oscar-winning title song from Isaac Hayes in its favour. Better than its two sequels. the plot centres on the kidnapping of a gangster's daughter. Glasgow: GFT. I Smoke (15) (Wayne Wang. US. 1995) Harvey Keitel. William Hurt. Harold Perrineau. 108 mins. Novelist Hurt offers homeless lad Perrineau a place to stay after he is saved from being run over. A teenage American beauty (Tyler) visits her late mother's bohemian ex-pat friends in Tuscany with a mind to lose her virginity to the young man for whom she has had a lasting infatuation. Rivals for her affections are many. and her arrival unsettles the balance of the house. The photography and handling of Bertolucci‘s first Italian-set film for fifteen years is characteristically masterful. although the storyline may contain a little too much middle- aged male lechery. Fife: Adam Smith. I StripteaanS) (Andrew Bergman. US. 1996) Derni Moore. Burt Reynolds. Armand Assante. 117 mins. Moore got paid a ludicrous amount of money for one of the biggest teases in cinema history. and disappointed fans in dirty macs won't find much else in the story to replace their thwared expectations. The story of a mum who strips to ensure the upkeep of her daughter. Striptease doesn't know if its comedy. thriller. satire or drama. To say it's better than Showgirls is like saying falling off a cliff is better than being hit by a bus. Edinburgh: UCI. Strathclyde: UCI Cl debank. I The MillHPG) (John Landis. US. 1996) Tom Arnold. Jessica Lundy. Christopher Lee. 94 mins. America's dumbest family stumble onto what they think is a massive rubbish theft scam. but is really a ploy by military baddies to sell arms to world criminals. Sumptuous adaptation of Thomas Hardy's tragic story of ill-fated love set in Victorian England where social circumstances conspire with unforseeable misfortunes to break the spirit of an innocent heroine. Handsome. evocative and absorbing. with a marvellous
performance from Ms Kinski. Edinburgh:
Cameo. I A Time To Kill (15) (Joel Schumacher. US. 1996) Matthew McConaughey. Sandra Bullock. Samuel L. Jackson. 149 mins. Based on an early John Grisham novel. this hellishly over-extended courtroom drama wastes its stellar cast on a crass-fuelled ride to cliche city. Hot newcomer McConaughey plays the struggling lawyer defending Jackson on a charge of murdering the white racist thugs who raped his young daughter: this being the Deep South. the job ain't going to be easy. Ultimately. it‘s all very pat and patronising. Glasgow: ABC Sauchiehall Street. Odeon at the Quay. Edinburgh: UCI. Borders: Pavilion. Strathclyde: UCls. I Tin cull (15) (Ron Shelton. US. 1996) Kevin Costner. Rene Russo. Cheech Maria. 135 mins. Unpredictable. washed-up golfer Costner tries to pull himself together and win the heart of his adversary's girl by entering the US Open. I The Tooth 0t ligeia ( 18) (Roger Corman. US. 196-1) Vincent Price. Elizabeth Shepherd. John Westbrook. 81 mins. The last in Corman's cyle of Poe-inspired movies (boasting a script by Robert Towne. no less) has Price grieving for his dead wife. who returns to haunt him as a cat. Gothically atmospheric. with an impressive turn by the often underrated Price. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Trainspotting (18) (Danny Boyle. UK. 1995) Ewan McGregor. Ewen Bremner'. Robert Carlyle. Jonny Lee Miller. 93 mins. John Hodge‘s screenplay perfectly captures the desperate humour of Irvine Welsh's novel. keeping the episodic structure ofjunkie scenes for the first half. before concentrating more on Renton in London in the later stages. Fast and stylish direction. creative soundtrack and acting that's off-the-rails excellent. A cinematic blast from beginning to end. which also shows a complex — and true - understanding of the lure and fatal consequences of drug-taking. Glasgow: City Centre Odeon. Edinburgh: ()deon. I The Truth About Cats And Dogs ( 15) (Michael Lehrnann. US. 1996) Urna Thurman. Janeane Garofalo. Ben Chaplin. 94 mitts. An insecure radio host asks her beatrtifnl neighbour to help her woo a British photographer. Modern female take on Cyrano De Bergerac. which keeps things moving in pleasant romantic comedy manner with plenty of sight gags and one-liners. But the whole concept is guarenteed to split audiences between those who agree beauty is only skirt deep and those who reckon it‘s only right to be disappointed if your date turns out not to be Uma Thurman. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Twelfth llight (U) (Trevor Ilurm. UK. 1996) Imogen Stubbs. Helena Bonharn Carter. Nigel Hawthorne. 135 mins. There's a dark cloud hanging over the happy ending in this splendid Shakespeare adaptation by ex-RSC top man Nunn. The farcical action brought about by the cross-dressing plot never loses sight of the pain at its core. and the joke on Malvolio (Hawthorne) has a cruel edge. Performances are excellent. with Ben Kingsley an inspired choice. bringing weight to the role of the fool I-‘este. See review and frontlines. Glasgow: Odeon at the Quay. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. UCI. I 12 Monkeys ( 15) (Terry Gilliam. US. 1995) Bruce Willis. Brad Pitt. Madeleine Stowe. 129 mins. A convict from the future is sent to the past to discover the source of a lethal virus that has devastated humanity. btrt even he begins to wonder if the images in his head are merely delusions. A complex time-travel fantasy. with liberal subplots and a decent mystery edge. that‘s lifted by Gilliam‘s ever-brilliant visual skills. It may at times stumble over its own inner logic. but it's an odd. eccentric creation that engages the imagination. Glasgow: Grosvenor.
I Twister (PG) (Jan De Bont. US. 1996) Helen Hunt. Bill Paxton. Jami Gertz. 113 mins. A meteorologist and his estranged scientist wife get together again while chasing the biggest tornado to hit Oklahoma in decades. The plot is slight. but the characters are interesting and. of course. the special effects are amazing. But the structure is too repetitive - each storm is a little bigger. each encounter a little closer — for this tr be something really special. Edinburgh: UCI. Strathclyde: UCI Clydebank.
I Two Days It The Valley (15) (John llerzfeld. US. 1996) Danny Aiello. Jeff Daniels. James Spader. 100 mins. Assassination. double-cross. kidnapping. nrurder - multiple characters pitch
up for this modest. old-fashioned but perfectly enjoyable movie that's filled with disamting performances. Aiello's touching study in clawed-back dignity tops the bill. See review. Glasgow: Odeon at the Quay. Edinburgh: UCI. Strathclyde: UCI Clydebank.
I The Unbearable lightness of eelng ( I8) (Philip Kaufman. US. 1987) Daniel Day-Lewis. Juliette Binoche. lena Olin. 167 mins. Ambitious adaptation of Milan Kundera's complex novel about a womanising Czech brain surgeon who falls in love for the first time with a doe-like small~town beauty at the time of the Russian invasion of 1968. A dawdling and rather austere narrative is given sortie spice and interest by an overwhelming eroticism. a beautifully judged evocation of Prague and gorgeous photography. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I The Varnplre lovers (18) (Roy Ward Baker. UK. 1970) Ingrid Pitt. Pippa Steele. Madeleine Smith. 91 mins. You want lesbian vampires. you got 'em. The action isn‘t at its best in this adaptation of Curmi/lu. but the erotic atmosphere is as good as Hammer ever achieved. Glasgow: GET.
I What‘s Eating Gilbert Grape? ( 12) (Lasse llallstrom. US. 1993) Johnny Depp. Juliette Lewis. Leonardo Di Caprio. 118 mins. For once. Depp is the sole figure of calm in an oddball world. the oldest son in a dysfunctional family
who live in a neurotic Iowa backwater. Only
when holiday-maker Lewis an'ives does he begin to consider his own feelings. With one eye on detail. the other on the absurd. director Lasse (My Life As A Dog) llallstrorn delivers a sympathetic romance surrounded by American foibles. The acting is superb from all concerned. A low-key wonder. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I When The Cat's Away (15) (Cedric Klapish. France. 1996) Garance Clavel. Oliver Py. Zinedine Soualem. 95 mins. The magic of Paris is captured perfectly in this sparkling. unpretentious movie which is deep in emotion. btrt light in touch. When her feline friend goes missing. Chloe (Clavel) gathers together her neighbours to search for the errant moggy. and discovers more about life on the way. A low key joy. See review. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I The Wind In The Willows (I?) (Tcn‘y Jones. UK. 1996) Terry Jones. Eric Idle. Steve Coogan. 88 mitts. When Mole's home is destroyed by weasel property developers. he enlists the help of Rat. Badger and egotistical Toad to uncover a conspiracy. Jones's Python-for-kids adaptation of the classic novel is a tad self-indulgent. with some awful songs and lacklustre pacing. However. the characters and atmosphere will probably charm a younger audience not yet into their more cynical teens. See review. General release.
I The Witches (PG) (Nicholas Roeg. US. 1990 Anjelica Huston. Mai Zetterling. Rowan Atkinson. 92 mins. Nine year-old Luke is warned by his Norwegian granny about the everpresent threat posed by witches. which isn't much help because within the next half hour he stumbles on their annual convention in a small English hotel and gets hirnselfchanged into a mouse.
