I Alan Brown Guartet Pizza Express. 151 Queen Street. 221 3333. 9pm. £4. including aperitif. call for reservations. This young saxophonist from Elgin has been studying iti New York with the great hard bop tenor man George Coleman. so look out for some muscular blowing.
I Tim Garland Duartet Basement Jazz. The Ratushorn Theatre. Ingram Street. info on 887 4733. 10pm—lam. £5 (£3.50). Basement Jazz gets back in action with a visit from saxophonist Garland. :1 regular member of the Nigel Clark Quintet. as well as co-leading Lammas. This gig he sets the Scottish connection aside when he leads his new quartet. featuring Phil Robson (guitar). either Laurence Cottle or Alec Dankworth (bass). and Winston Clifford (drums). There will be no gig next week. so as not to conflict with the Dunoon Jazz Festival (see Fri 11).

A new concept for the Friday night slot in ()ctober. aimed at bringing together the jazz and jungle cultures under a single roof. Singer Fionna Duncan and Her Trio will open proceedings (9.30pm—midnight. £4 (£31). followed by Bad X Sample (12.30—3am). a new jazz-meets-jungle outfit co-led by keyboard player Paul Harrison and DJ Eh?Wun! of Freshly Squeezed. Jazz soloists will be invited to lay their thoughts over the breakbeats.

Drummer John Rae leads a rhythm section, generally featuring either Bn'an Kellock (piano) or Kevin MacKenzie (guitar). and Kenny Ellis (bass). After that. it’s anybody's guess who might turn up to blow.
MONDAY 7

The idea is to create an informal opportunity forjazz- theatre performance. in which both playwrights and musicians can try out new or experimental work. Bass and tuba player Lindsay Cooper leads a session devoted to free jazz. improvisation and progressive musicial experimentals of all kinds. Bring your instrument. orjust enjoy the unexpected.
TUESDAY 8

I Drink or Dinner with George Melly Bourbon Street. 108 George Street. 552 0141. 8.30pm. £14.50 (drink) or £29.50 (dinner). Wit. raconteur. cultural polymath and alleged jazz singer George Melly struts his stuff for three nights at close range in Bourbon Street’s intimate setting. Unlike the earlier experiment with Carol Kidd. Melly will play one show per night rather than two. and there is a cheaper non-dining option available (the ‘drink’ ticket quoted above). Hearing Carol in this setting was a memorable experience. and if the singing definitely won‘t be as good here. it should all be great fun for his many fans. You may need sun glasses to cope with his suit at this range. though. I Bruce Mathislte Paisley Arts Centre. New Street. 887 1010. 8pm. £6. A solo concert from this fine Australian guitarist.
