The members or Arab Strap’s immediate tamin have had a tow concerns over the content or the Falkirk duo’s recordings. ‘Dur lyrics are basically honest,’ admits guitarist Malcolm Middleton. ‘IIothing is glossed over or lett to the imagination. A lot ot the songs won’t get airplay cos, they’re . . . well . . . you know, “tuck,” “dick,” “bastard,” you know.’

Lyricist and vocalist (or ‘crooner’ as his comrade describes him), Aidan Mottat concurs. ‘My mother listened to the album last week and she didn’t mention it tor a while,’ he recalls. ‘Eventually she said “it’s a bit trank” and it hasn’t been talked about since.’ The name has, how can I put this, aroused some interest. An Arab strap is a marital aid, it you must know. ‘My gran asked me about the name,’ recalls Middleton. ‘She said “would you not have been better calling yourselves Central Belt?”’ The band’s name, like the device itselr, is not hindering their rise to what could be

Radio 1’s interest in the single ‘First Big Weekend’ has spread from Peel to The Evening Session and onto Mark Radclitre, though a breakrast time airing may be some time oh. llaving been involved with a number or local bands, the pair got together a year ago, sent ott demos and Chemikal Underground got in touch. The protile ot the label may be both helpful and a hindrance. ‘I think because ot Bis and the media attention they got, people are expecting certain things from us,’ explains Mottat. ‘The bands on Chemikal Underground are all ditterent, there’s just a similar attitude going on.’ As Middleton indicates, their attitude to playing live is also uncorporate. ‘I hate going to see bands live and it’s just like having a picture at them in front or you and they’re playing their album note tor note.’ Expect something a little ditrerent lrom Arab Strap.
