Montall Jordan's second album More To Tell (Def Jam) picks up where he left off with his platinum- selling debut This Is How We Doll with thirteen super-smooth swingbeat tracks tracing Montell's obvious fascination with the ladies. His trademark sexy laidback delivery is evident from the opening track. the aptly-titled ‘Superlover Man'. a mid- tempo number that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Elsewhere. Jordan does what he (and most other male swing stars) do best — sings about luurve 'and sex. Luckily Jordan makes an effort to keep the tempo up instead of banging out too many soft ballads. Best uptempo numbers are the soulful ‘Tn'cks On My Mind‘. the Four Tops-ish ‘All I Need' and 'l.et Me Be The One'. all of which could rock the right club.
Montell Jordan: ladies man, apparently
: Best track by far though is
the next single ‘I Like lt' ‘ featuring rapper Slick ; Rick. As ever. the
' rap/swing fusion produces
firin’ results. As a bonus. Jordan rounds things off with ‘Bounce To This‘ a
- pumping number that ends the album on a high.
On this side of the
Atlantic. our very own Nu Colours are producing
' some top quality British
: soul and R & B cuts.
Their new album Nu
Colours (Wildcard)
proves that we've got
; what it takes to compete
with the Americans in the
; soul stakes. Kicking off with the last single. the uplifting. sensuous ‘Special Kind Of Lover‘.
i the album delivers deep. gospel-tinged numbers (‘I
. Pray') and a number of surefire dancefloor
packers (‘Desire‘ and
' ‘Joy'). Basically. it‘s a
killer collection of soul. R
- & B and swing with a very definite and positive
Bn'tish flavour. Support it. On the house tip. this fortnight‘s top mix CD
. award goes to Kiss FM's Steve Jackson with his I House That Jack Built
(Breakdown Records)
. compilation. Jackson is
currently Kiss FM‘s most
popular daytime jock and .
on the basis of this choice collection of house tracks it’s not hard to see why. Keeping true to the underground (unlike most of today's mix-makers) Jackson has selected seventeen slammin‘ and extremely soulful cuts. Highlights are many but the mid-section where he ups the tempo from Shawn Benson‘s soulful vocal on ‘Music’ to Kerri Chattdler'sjazz~ltouse number ‘Kerri‘s Theme‘ and ‘You Got To Pray' by diva-supreme Joi Cardwell is particularly fine. This is very much the sound of our more
garagey/purist dancefloors -
but it ought to please anyone with a love for ‘real' house. That he signs off with the phenomenally groovy vocal ‘Not Enough Lovin‘ by Keith Thompson is reason alone to buy this.
Lastly back on the
g swing thing. check out
Bobby Brown's comeback
effort with old skoolers New Edition. Against all the odds. it‘s absolutely
;superb stuff. (Jim Byers)
