I Jazz Festival Club 3-6pm. £4. Saxophonist Frank Brooker launches an afternoon devoted to the tenor sax with his quartet. followed by the Danny Moss liuartet (4pm). Danny is then joined by Jack Doll in a two tenors presentation (5pm).

The Scottish Jan Celebrities present their tribute to the music of Buck Clayton and Buddy Tate. followed by Pete Allen’s Tiger nag (3.45pm) and the Uralsky Jazzmen (5pm). The Russians also get things going in The Harlem Room at 2.30pm. followed by Cajun outfit-Psycho Zydeco (3.45pm) and the Dave Denehoe llevr Orleans Jazz Band (5pm).
I The Cotton Club Spin-2am. £l0. This is the final jazz session in The Cotton Club before the Blues Festival takes up residence. and an attractive one it is. too. Pete Allen’s Tiger nag wartn things up. followed by an early taste of the blues from the T..I. Johnson Did (9. ISpm). Humphrey Lyttelton then teams up with Echoes of Ellington (1 c.30pm, see preview), then Scott Hamilton does likewise ( l |.45pm). The Criterion Parade Band ( l2.45am) take a quick turn round the building to see out the jazz. and the TJ. Johnson Band ( lam) return to symbolically usher in the blues. Up in The Harlem Room. the Frank Crooker ouartet are followed by the Dave oonohoe M Orleans Jan Band (9. ISpm and lam). the Uralsky Jazzmen (l0.30pm). and the Pets Allen Jazzmen ( l l.45pm).

I Memphis legends 7.30—t lpm. £ l0. A major change of programme here. with Rufus Thomas unable to attend. The Memphis llorns step in at short notice to share the bill with Ann Peebles (see preview). The show will be followed by a separate concert which is actually The Cavendish’s own promotion. yet another variant on the overworked Blues Brothers theme ( l lptn).
SATURDAY 10
I Swamp clues/ladies Sing The Blues
l l.30am. £5. A workshop with Dick Banovich and Spider Mackenzie opens proceedings. It continues with the ‘Ladies‘ element of the programme.
takin in Liverpool band Blues Shouter \vith Connie lush ( lpm) and the Helen Watson Band(2.15pm). Things then get swam y with American West Coast outfit Mick artin’s Blues nockers (3.30pm) and the Henry Cray Blues Band (5pm). led by Howlin’ Wolf's long-time piano man. I Blues In The Evening 7. l 5pm. £ l0. Ireland's premiere blues outfit The Blues Experience get things underway. followed by the brash young English band The Iloax (8.45pm). Top of the bill is a chance to hear ex-Mother Earth (that's the original 60s San Francisco one. not the current acid jazz lot) vocalist Tracy llelson ( l0pm). Equally at home in both blues and country music. she has one of the most powerful female voices in the business. and is accompanied here by Scotland's own Jim Condie Band.
SUNDAY 11
I lines In The Afternoon lptn. £5. Two stages are in operation for the afternoon session. with electric bands in the main arena. and acoustic acts upstairs. The main stage features the Leeds duo Peter Cilgan and Doctor Brown ( l ptn). London‘s Texas-influenced Motel Kings (2pm). the Frank White Band (3.30pm) from Sheffield. and Canadian guitarist Tony D (5pm) with his band. The acoustic stage launches with a Guitar Workshop with Mike Brosman (noon). followed by naphael Callaghan and Christine Purnell (lpm). singer Eddie Martin (2pm). the harp and guitar duo of Dick Banovitch and Spider McKenzie (3pm). the return of slide guitar virtuoso Mike Brosman
(4. l5pm). this time for a performance (although the workshop will probably be that. too). and a closing set from Dave Peabody (5.30pm).
I Blues in The light 7. l 5pm. £l0. The final session gets underway with the great American singer-songwriter Chris Smither and his signature blue guitar. Next up in an all-American bill is Big Joe Turner’s Memphis Blues Caravan (8.45pm). led by B. 8. King's bass player and multi- instrumentalist. Rounding out both the evening and the Festival in their inimitable eclectic fashion will be New Jersey's Holmes Brothers ( lOpm. see preview).
