LISTINGS GLASGOW INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVALfi
I GEORGE eeusort: George Benson made himseli both rich and famous playing smooth, sophisticated iazz-iunk-soul lusion. In the wake of his mega-selling breakthrough album Breezin’, he laid down some classics oi the genre in the process, and a lot that was decidedly bland alongside them. It made him one oi the biggest crossover successes of all, but the transition to pop singer also robbed iazz oi a great instrumentalist and genuiner gifted improviser, as even a cursory listen to his 60s iazz sides will contirm. lie can still cut loose when the spirit moves him, though - which is not nearly often enough.
