I I HAVE BEEN HERE BEFORE is set in the 1930s at The Black Bull, a lonely inn
on the Yorkshire moors, but don’t let the setting tool you: it’s no cosy nostalgia trip. Written eight years before The inspector Calls, the play is one of .l.B. Priestley’s three ‘time plays’, all of which explore the possibility that time may be split or circular in form. in Hereford-based Middle Ground Theatre Company’s touring production, time theorist or Gortler and publican Sam Shipley are played by llicholas Smith (of Are You Being Served tame) and Frederick Pyne (oi Emmerdale). Together they discover, with drastic and suspense-ridden results, the awful truth behind the play’s enigmatic title . . .
