Chatelherault is also hosting a Wacky Woodland Wildlife Day on Stmday 2 which will be eminently suitable for families with kids of all ages. Besides activites in the forest. Amber the Barn ()wl will be visiting for the afternoon.

I ISLE OF ARRAN FOLK FESTIVAL Mon 3~Sun 9. Various venues around Arran. Tourist Information Centre: 01770 302 140. A top tip among folk festivals according to The List's own folkie. Everything frotn full-on idyllic interludes on the west coast of the island to a headbanging final night in the huge marquee in Brodick. If you check one band. make it Deiseal. (which does not refer to a German engineer. but the Celtic propensity for rotating sunwise). They are improvising geniuses from Ireland in a traditional style.

Although there are such events as the ‘perambulation' around the stones marking the borough's old border on Monday (6pm) followed by a sashing ceremony. the main events take place on I.animcr Day: Thursday 6. A procession makes its way round the streets of the town frotn 10am and when they say a procession. they mean a big one with eleven bands and over 800 children and adults taking part. From noon—5.30pm there is an event in Castlebank Park (£1 entry for adults) with Highland dancing. dog shows. stalls and the usual beer tent. The park will also be the site of a fair on Saturday 8. noon—5pm. This is not so traditional: it has a distinctly country and western theme.

four major canals were built: the Union, from Edinburgh to Falkirk; the Forth and Clyde, joining the two rivers between Falkirk and Glasgow; the Caledonian, which allows small boats to travel from Inverness to Fort William without the dangerous trip round the North West coast; and the Crinan, from Crinan to Ardrishaig, which let them continue the journey to Glasgow without having to go round Kintyre.
They were a vital part of the transport infrastructure and before the building of the Edinburgh/Glasgow railway the canal was the quickest way of getting from one city to the other.
The Caledonian apart, the canals fell into decline after World War I, and were officially closed in the 1960s. While enthusiasts almost immediately started to promote the recreational facility offered by the canals, it was not until the announcement of the Millennium Fund that the idea of re-opening the canal all the way from Glasgow to Edinburgh
became anything more than a pipe dream. Now that dream is on the A list for £100 million of Millennium Fund cash.
The first nine days of June are Canal Week, when British Waterways are promoting over 30 events organised by local groups. These range from a fun day and dance at Ardrishaig on Saturday 1 (01546 603210), to boat trips along the Slateiord viaduct on Wednesday 5 (0131 556 4503) and a come and try event at the Firhill Basin in Glasgow on Sunday 9 (0141 332 9115, ext 19).
Recreational use of the canals has existed since the late 19th century, when Sunday afternoon boat trips were a common entertainment. life has sped up somewhat since then, which is a very good reason to take a leisurely few hours out and enjoy your local canal. (Thom Dibdin)
