nory Weller sorts the wheat from the chair on this iortnight’s DJ oi choice.
I liante? Ray ‘Roc‘ Checo and Juan 'Kato' Lemtrs.
I Occupation? DJ s. producers and rernixers.
I Home? Both live in Queens in New York.
I So, Roc & Kato, what’s your story? The two of them had been DJ irig separately round the New York house party scene since 1987 and gradually got to know each other. setting up a DJ partnership where they would use four decks and two mixers. each scratching. cutting and mixing at the same time.
I And the production work? They'd been doing odds and ends of studio work. but it was only when they did a megamix for Warlock Records. the label where Todd Terry started. that they decided it was time to sink money into setting up their own label and recording studio: Digital Dungeon.
I Why Digital Dungeon? Well. all the equipment is digital. and it‘s in a basement (dungeon sounding a little more sexy than basement).
I What do they do down there? The first track they shared production credits on was the 1091 underground stormer ‘Jungleluv‘. ‘Jungle Kisses‘ came two years later and they topped the hype charts last year with a sparky disco number ‘Alright'. They’ve got separate labels for each genre: Dungeon Trax and Playhouse for the New York jurnpin’ house vibe. Latin dance label Basic and Rhythm Factor for the deep DJ underground.
I So what’s new? Unfortunately the two of them ceased working as a production team at the end of last year due to musical differences. They still continue to work together as a DJ team. but just until their series of bookings are completed. Checo says they want to develop themselves as individual DJs in their own right. Their forthcoming date at The Arches in Glasgow sees them DJing as a team.
I What kind oi places have they DJed? They prefer the European scene to New York. playing clubs like Back to Basics. Ministry of Sound and Club UK.
I What’s wrong with home? They hate the closed door. closed mentality of the New York club scene. preferring the European scene where. according to Checo: ‘The audience are more progressive. innovation is appreciated and people actually want to dance.’
