I Ace Ventin: When We Calls (PG) (Steve Oedekerk. US. 1995) Jim Carrey. Simon Callow. Ian McNeice. 94 mins. This puerile. stereotyped and occasionally brilliant follow-up to the surprise hit that launched Carrey's career finds the pet detective in Africa. The natives are defined by silly rituals and a war-like nature. the English as upper~class twits. and amongst it all. Carrey's hit-and-miss antics become wearisome. Glasgow: MGM Paikhead.

92 mins. An orphaned pig falls under the eye of a kindly collie and begins to think he's destined for glory at the regional trials. There‘s enough skewered humour (hail the psycho mice!) for adults to discover an unexpected cult hit. A triumph for the underpig. General release.
I m to In Future (PG) (Robert Zemeckis. US. 1985) Michael J. Fox. Lea Thompson. Crispin Glover. 1 16 mins. Desen'edly popular time-travelling fantasy adventure with street- srnart 80s teenager whisked back in time for a little chicanery with his future parents. Borders: Pavilion.

I Beautiful Thing (18) (Hettie MacDonald. UK. 1996) Linda Hery. Glen Berry. Scott Neal. 90 mins. I Beyond m (12) (John Boonnan. US. 1995) Patricia Arquette. Frances McDonnand. Spalding Gray. 100 mins. An American physician (Arquette) stumbles upon the lawless military dictatorship of Burma and the mass slaughter carried out there in the late 1980s. The sweeping landscapes have a powerful beauty. but ultimately the political lecturing becomes too much even for such an impressive canvas to bear. Strathclyde: Magnum.
I The Birdcage ( 15) (Mike Nichols. US. 1995) Robin Williams. Nathan Lane. Gene Ilackman. 1 19 mins. A remake of La (‘age Aux Fol/es with plenty to say about contemporary America‘s hypocrisy. Williams is superb (and more restrained) as the gay nightclub owner whose attempts to impress the right—wing parents of his son's fiancee go awry. Funny and sensitive. with excellent perfomiances. Glasgow: Odeon. MGM Parkhead. Edinburgh: Dominion. Odeon. UCI. Strathclyde: UCIs.

Scott. US. l98m2) Harrison Ford. Sean Young. Rutger Hauer. 116 mins. Out go the pseudonoir narration and the tacked-on happy ending: in comes a more defined sense that Deckard himself may be a replicant. The look and feel remain as powerful. and the acting is superb. A flawed masterpiece is now a restored masterpiece. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Blood Sinle ( 18) (Joel Coen. US. 1983) John Getz. Francis McDoimand. M. Emmet Walsh. 99 mins. Auspicious debut from the Coen brothers‘ direction/production team. Walsh excels as the seedy Sheriff investigating a simple murder whose devilish Texan chronicle of double- crossing is anything but simple. An enthusiastic attempt at contemporary film noir. which keeps everyone guessing even after the final frame. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I mm (18) (Michelle Handelman. US. 1995) 77 mins. An A—Z of S&M set against the backdrop of San Francisco‘s dyke leather community. who sometimes feel marginalised within an already marginalised group. Serious issues are juxtaposed with bizarre images and passtimes. Shown on U-matic video. Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Blue I The Face (15) (Wayne Wang. US. 1995) Harvey Keitel. Roseanne. Victor Argo. 8‘) mins. Using Keitel's cigar store manager‘s tangled love life as a loose narrative thread. the makers of Smoke returned to the set for an improvised portrait of Brooklyn and its residents. Witty celebrity cameos aplenty from Madonna. Jim Jamiusch and Michael J. Fox. in what is nothing less than a party on screen. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I The Blues Brothers ( 15) (John Landis. US. 1980) John Belushi. Dan Aykroyd. Carrie Fisher. 130 mins. Bloated, overlong anarchic Chicago comedy with the two stars on a mission from God to salvage the imperilled fortunes of an orphanage. Lots of guest stars. musical numbers and automotive destruction in a typical product of over-emphatic contemporary American humour. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. Strathclyde: Magnum.
I Bram ( 15) (Mel Gibson. US. 1995) Mel Gibson. Patrick McGoohan. Sophie Marceau. 177 mins. Mel Gibson‘s long and bloody account of the life of Scottish wam'or hero William Wallace boasts some remarkable battle scenes and great performances. Unfortunately. the film‘s Scottish passion is tempered by a few Hollywood moments — touches of sentimentality and ‘dramatic' historical inaccuracy. Edinburgh: Odeon. UCI. Strathclyde: Cannon. ()deon Ayr. UCI Clydebank.
I Broken Arrow ( 15) (John Woo. US. 1995) John Travolta. Christian Slater. Samantha Mathis. 86mins. Bad guy pilot Travolta ejects his partner Slater from the cockpit while on a routine assignment and nips off with two live nuclear missiles. The script (by the writer of Speed) falls over itself in an attempt to set tip as many problems as possible for Slater to solve. but it also offers plenty of superior set pieces. And Travolta relishes playing the villain. Edinburgh: UCI. Strathclyde: UCI Clydebank. I The BM: (15) (Scotland. 1996) Sandy Welch. Oliver Reed. Brian Blessed. A brave attempt to take on another slice of Scottish history — Bannockbum — but all the best intentions in the world can‘t obscure the truth that bad dialogue is bad dialogue wherever it occurs. Better than the filmmakers‘ previous effort. Chasing The Deer. but there's still a long way to go before their work can be heartily recommended as worthy of the general public's hard-earned cash. Strathclyde: ()deon Ayr.
I hMllS) (Neil Hunter/Tom Hunsinger. UK. 1995) 85 mins. Made at the no-budget end of the British film industry. this gay variation on The Big Chill follows three male couples — all going through tempestuous times in their relationships — as they spend a weekend in the country. Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Glasgow: GET.
I The CGIIIIOIII ENNIS) (Rob Epstein/Jeffrey Friedman. US. 1995) 102 mins. Mixing archive clips and perceptive. often witty. interviews. this informative study of the coded gay characters and themes in the history of Hollywood is undeniably entertaining. Unfortunately. it's like ()-t.evel ‘Gays In Film for those who know anything about the subject and the analysis of modern gay movies lacks both context and intellectual rigour. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Chariots Of Fire (PG) (Iltigh Hudson. IX. 1981) Ben Cross. Ian (‘harleson Nigel Haveis. 123 mins. Wonyingly jingoistic \rsion of the 1924 Paris Olympics and the exploits of runners Harold Abraharns and Eric Liddell that. in its numerous slow-motion races. is to blame for Vangelis soundtracks becoming synonymous with athletics. Nevertheless. it won a fair few Oscars. Fife: New Picture House.
I Clea Encourters of the Third Kiid: Special Editifl (PG) (Steven Spielberg. ITS. 1977/80) Richard breyfuss. Francois Tniffaut. Teri Gan. 132 mins. There may be additional effects and
