Rory Weller dlgs deep tor the facts on this weeks or or choice.

\.

I Name Slam (or Stuart Mcmillan and Orde Meikle).

I Occupation Resident DJs at Slam. founders of Sonia records. remixers and record producers.

I Whlch hat are they wearing here? Producers. The long awaited Slam debut album Headsmres is released this issue.

I What have they released already? They kicked off Soma in 1991 with ‘Etema‘. Their biggest success was the 1993 classic ‘Positive Education’, a forever endun'ng track which continually pops up in the oddest places: Tango and Muzik ads for starters.

I Didn’t they have an album out before? Not exactly. The 1995 Snapshots EP contained six tracks, but was more a collection of bangin‘ deep house and techno tracks than an album with sweeps ofemotion. I Does that describe Headsrares? Indeed. It‘s a mature. well- constructed piece of work. Macmillan and Meikle describe it as a filmscape with tracks ranging from ‘deepjazzy Detroit. evil gangsta rap to a fusion of drum and bass and melodic techno’.

I Hot their usual stuff then No. The most club-friendly track is ‘Dark Forces’ with a ‘dark “Reese‘- style bassline and jazzy scatty drums’ which was released at the end of last month.

I Why the change In style? In the frenzied world of hard clubbing it‘s something they felt they needed to do. It's not a permanent shift of focus. just an exploration of the other kinds of music which they have enjoyed and been influenced by.

I Such as? Phuture and Larry Heard (aka Mr Fingers).

I Who are they? In 1987 Phuture led by Roy Davis Jr who recently played The Sub Club made ‘We are Phuture’, which had ‘Slam‘ constantly repeated through it. Stuart and Orde grabbed it as their title.

I So Is the album any good? lt's possibly the best dance album ever to have come out of Scotland. (Rory Weller)

Headstares is released on Some Records on 20 May.
