Rory Weller sounds out another man and his decks

ORION BEST

I llame? Larry Heard.

I Occupation? Seminal Detroit character.

I Aren’t there a rather a lot or them? Yes. we do tend to lay it on a bit thick with the Detroit mob. but this is the real thing: a man a good decade ahead of his time. a prophet. and. dare we say it. a Chicago house god.

I What has he done to deserve such reckless adoration? Mention his name in dance circles and you'll be met with an obeisant hush. He was the founder member of legendary Chicago house collective Fingers Inc. is a consummate keyboard artist and apparently also invented ambient house music in 1988 with his Amnesia album. You‘ll find his work in the record boxes of people who say ‘that‘s a dark track. rnan' a lot.

I What’s he up to right now? He's got two albums out at the moment. one is .S't‘eneries not Songs Volume Ta and the second is called Alien. The first is a little tricky to get hold of with orders only being taken on an lntemet address.

I A little perverse perhaps? If you‘d had the trouble this guy has you’d be cautious of the record industry too. The anthem track ‘Can You Feel lt‘ has been getting on for 100,000 sales but poor Larry only got paid for 3.000. He then hooked up with another record label who proceeded to fleece him too.

I He must have made a bit or money though? In the man‘s own words he is currently ‘dirt poor'. exactly the same position he was in when he started and he's getting worried. As an ex-social security pensions officer he knows how hard the future can be.

I Are things on the up for Larry now? The first Sceneries nor Songs won The Guardian album of the year in 1995 and Alien has been universally well-received. the kind of thing that opens new doors of creativity for dance music as a whole.

Alien is out now on Blue/(market records.
