HARD DANCE
MELTDOWN
Gonemelt make wonderfully sparse, funky hard dance music. The three Tonbridgo denizens, Ashley Marlowe, Grant llewman and llathaniel Mellors, are currently riding high on a wave of credibility, having just released their Confuse And Destroyalbum on Andy Weatherall’s Emissions label.
The recording is live and without a sampler in sight, these slaves to the Iow-tec manage to stretch their analogue equipment to the limits. When recording the album, they didn’t bother with a poncey DAT machine or anything like that - they recorded it straight on to an SA90 compact cassette. It’s live, it’s visceral, it’s on the edge, but they’d rather it wasn’t.
The band’s low-ii approach isn’t motivated by any deep musical philosophies - it’s about plain economics. Although having their album on the painfully prestigious Emissions label, they don’t get much cash. ‘l’ve had to beg and scrape just to get a few hundred quid, and we don’t get any money to make the recordings,’ says Mellors. ‘What we do is the best production we can do within our means.’
But it they can create an album which contains the NME Vibes Single or The Week, ‘Flashennac’, then what could they come up with given a whole pile of cash? Back to Mellors: ‘The sound would obviously get better,
we’re not stupid enough to lose sight or what we’ve got. We wouldn’t go technology crazy and have huge trance build ups and break downs like BT [Brian Tresneau]. We write instinctively, we’d simply build and improve on what we’ve already done.’ Has anyone got a couple of quid they could lend Conemelt? (Rory Weller)
