Over 32 working model railways, mainly from model railway clubs around Scotland, mean that it’s your chance to get in there and ask those impossible questions like ‘how do you keep the track clean?’ (you don’t!). Everything the tamin trainset owner to the skilled scale modeller could want, with second-hand wagons, books, sound effect CDs, demonstrations and even the Railway Preservation Societies on hand.

I CADEMUIR HILL ORGANISED WALK Sun 25 Feb. 1 1am—4pm. Meet outside the Peebles swimming pool. ()1835 830281. £1 (50p). A walk up the Cadernuir Hills behind Peebles with the Borders Ranger Service to look at the Iron Age forts with their rare Cbeveaus de Frais (the Iron Age equivalent of an anti-tank device. but for horses). Take a few sarnies and wear footwear which is suitable for a steep climb.

A gentle hike through the woodlands and over the moorlands of the Bowhill estate. following the route of the old Victorian carriage drive. Don't forget your packed lunch.

I OPEN NIGHT AT MILLS OBSERVATORY Fri 23 Feb. from 7pm. Mills Observatory. Balgay Park. Dundee ()382 67138. Free. The observatory will be open as usual. but with planetarium shows at 7.15pm. 8pm and 8.45pm. If the sky is clear. there will also be views of the Moon through the tnain telescope. During the winter the observatory is open 3—10pm (Mon—Fri) and 2—5pm (Sat) with slide shows. exhibitions and use of the telescope.
