G LOVE AND SPECIAL SAUCE were last summer‘s hot ticket with theirjazz and blues-tinged hip hop stew which prompted the band to coin the term ‘ragmop'. Now less than a year after their debut album. they return with an even better follow up. Coast to Coast Motel. which puts the strong Delta blues influence higher in the mix. G Love's plaintive. white-boy voice- overs are recorded in the lo-fi style of early blues recordings. while the simple drums and bass backing really swings. legendary blues label Okeh. whose artists included Duke Ellington and Bo Diddley. was revived recently with G Love and Special Sauce as the come-back release. This perfectly represents the marriage ofold and new embodied by the band.

ADRIAN WISZNIEWSKI was commissioned by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery to paint this triple portrait of the Citizens‘ Theatre‘s three directors Philip Prowse. Giles Havergal and Robert David MacDonald. It‘s currently on display at the Citz. before transferring to its permanent home in the Portrait Gallery next month.
KEN LUM’s diptychs (that’s two- thirds of a triptych, dummy) are based on pictures of ordinary people at work, rest and play, alongside short bursts of semi- ironic texts supplied by the photographer. What does it all mean? See Art preview for details of this show at Stills, Edinburgh.
