FILM LISTINGS WEEK ONE
surgeon who falls in love for the first time with a doe-like small-town beauty at the time of the Russian invasion of I968. A dawdling and rather austere narrative is given some spice and interest by an overwhelming eroticism. a beautifully judged evocation of Prague and gorgeous photography. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Unstnmg Heroes (PG) (Diane Keaton. US. 1995) Andie MacDowell. John Turturro. Nathan Watt. 95 mins. Set in the early 60$. Keaton's feature debut as director is shot in sentimentally faded tones and is peopled by off-beat eccentrics. MacDoweII is the Jewish wife who comes down with cancer. Turturro her emotionally useless husband. Watt the isolated kid who's confused by his mother's ‘secret‘ illness. but who finds solace with his wacky uncles. It's too goofy to really capture the underlying loneliness of life. Glasgow: GFT. I The Usual Suspects (18) (Bryan Singer. US. 1995) Gabriel Byme. Kevin Spacey. Stephen Baldwin. 106 mins. There’s a good sense of noir fatalism hanging over The Usual Suspects. which is guessing game cinema at its best. A perfectly matched team of crooks discover that their chance meeting wasn't so random after all: they're being used in an intricate vendetta by legendary gangster boss Keyser Sose. So stylish. it sends a tingle down the spine: but the ludicrous use of Pete Postletwaite's character almost undermines it all. Glasgow: GF'T. Odeon. MGM Parkhead. Edinburgh: Odeon. I The Vanishing (15) (George Sluzier. Netherlands. 1988) Bernard Pierre Donnadieu. Gene Bervoets. Johanna Ter Steege. 106 mins. A young Dutch woman on holiday with her boyfriend in France disappears inexplicably. and her partner spends years of his life tracking her down. eventually to meet up with her mysterious abductor under the most nerve-shattering of circumstances. Meticulous in every department and with a truly chilling supn'se ending. Sluzier's film not only boasts the last decade's most convincing movie villian but is invested with a very affecting undercurrent of emotional vulnerability. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Vigorous “398808) 91 mins. A diverse programme. under the New Visions banner. which highlights why animation is one of the most popular forms of filtrunaking. The line up is: Chris Evans‘ The Fairy Tale. Joanne Simpson's Jabberwm'k)‘. Leeds Animation Workshop’s Alice In Wasteland. Simon Fildes' Missing The Point Completely. Scott llennessey's Ethaust Pipe Dream. Vicky West’s End Of The Line. Phil Mulloy's Laughing Moon. Dave and Rob Miller's Nose Job. Richard Wright's Heliacentrum. Daniel Bool's Lucy In Terracotta. Kayla Parker's As Yet Unseen. Rosehall Arts Group's Dangemus Game. Geoff Holder‘s Eden and Sara Downes' Winter Trees. Glasgow: GFT. I Viridiana (18) (Luis Bunuel. Spain/Mexico. 1961) Silvia Pinal. Francisco Rabal. Fernando Rey. Margarita Lozano. Teresa Rabal. 91 mins. A masterpiece of darkly comic brutality from the Spanish master of the surreal. Pinal stars as a Vin'diana. a golden-hearted nun who offers succour/to a community of beggars. but is ridiculed and cheated. With a superb visual elan. Bunuel satirises the ingratitude and barbarity of humanity: often verging on blasphemy. with the result that the film was inunediately banned in his home country. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I The W (PG) (Jon Avnet. US. 1994) Kevin Costner. Elijah Wood. Mate Winningham. 125 mins. Since returning from the Vietnam War. Stephen (Costner) has struggled to keep down a job: meanwhile. his son and daughter light out their own battles during the summer of 1970 with the neighbouring white trash troupe. A wonderful family movie with strong liberal themes. The War really belongs to the kids rather than Costner. Wood's performance is easily one of the best by a child actor ever put on screen. See review. Glasgow: MGM Film Centre. Edinburgh: UCI. I The White Balloon (U) (Jafar Panahi. Iran. I995) Aida Mohammadkhani. Mohsen Kaftli. Fereshteh Sadr Orfani. 84 mins. A young girl goes to the market to buy a goldfish. but loses her money on the way. The material may be the most mundane of concerns. but this film. which unfolds in real time. is as nerve-wracking as any Hitchcock thriller. With its truth to detail. stylistic simplicity and wonderful depiction of innocence and purity. it reawakens faith in the medium of cinema. See preview. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Ther Poisoner's liantliook (18) (Benjamin Ross) Hugh O'Conor. Antony Sher. Charlotte Coleman. 105 mins. Adolescent bitterness and a schoolboy fascination with toxic substances become a lethal chemical cocktail when teenager Graham Young starts poisoning family and friends. Director Ross takes great risks with his material. but the tone is expertly rendered - there are moments of excruciating horror and nastiness. but they're complemented by a dark and disturbing comedy. Fife: Adam Smith.
