East Kilbride. I The Swan Princess (U) (Richard Rich. US. 1995) With the voices ot'John Cleese. Jack Palance. Steven Wright. 94 mins. Swan Lake in its fairytale form. with all the expected ingredients that modem children's animated features contain - talking animals. bland but cute heroes. musical routines. An evil magician casts a spell on a princess. turning her into a swan. And any film that features Palance doing a song called 'No More Mr Nice Guy' has to be worth a visit. See Kids section. US. 1983) Christopher Guest. Michael McKean. Harry Shearer. RJ. Parnell. Ed Begley Jr. 82 mins. Certainly the most ingenious. accurate and funny of all spoof rockumentaries. with wonderfully spontaneous dialogue. convincing fly-on-the-wall camera work. self-penned heavy metal parodies. and of course the amp that goes to ll. Edinburgh: Film Guild. I Three Wishes (PG) (Martha Coolidge. US. 1995) Patrick Swayze. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. 115 mins. ln Rambling Rose. director Coolidge nicely recreated a past period and found meaningful things to say; sadly. not here. During the 50s. drifter Jack (Swayze) is looked after by struggling ntum (Mastrantonio) and proves his ability to give baseball lessons and grant wishes. Sentimental rubbish without a hint of magic. Edinburgh: UCl. Strathclyde: UCI Clydebank. I The Tie That Binds (18) (Wesley Strick. US. 1995) Daryl Hannah. Keith Carradine. Moira Kelly. Vincent Spano. 97 mins. A white trash couple flee a botched burglary. leaving behind their young daughter. who's then taken into care and adopted. Soon they're breaking down the door of the nice middle-class family who have taken her in. Strathclyde: UCls. I To live (12) (Zhang Yimou. Hong Kong/China. 1994) Ge You. Gong Li. Niu Ben. 125 mins. With a gentle injection of humour alongside the tragedy. Zhang returns to the epic scope of his earlier films. following the effects of history on an unimposing family. The ironies thrown up by political changes. taking in the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution. may have bizarrely comic consequences. btit they also inllict pain at a grass-roots level. Ge You is a magnificent lead. Glasgow: GET. I True Romance (18) (Tony Scott. US. 1993) Christian Slater. Patricia Arquette. Dennis Hopper. 119 mins. Comic bookstore assistant Clarence meets. sleeps with and marries novice hooker Alabama within a matter of hours. then the lovebirds find themselves on the rtm with an accidentally stolen case of cocaine. Limelight- stealiug cameos and writer Quentin Tarantino's verbal set-pieces fire this excellent movie. the epitome of disposable pop culture for the fast- food generation. Glasgow: Grosvenor. I 23:58 (15) (Pierre-William Glenn. France. 1992) Jean-Francois Stevenin. Jean-Pierre Malo. Gerard Garnier. 83 mins. Film references come in all forms — imagery. dialogue. clips. plot similarity - in Glenn‘s caper movie. a specific homage to Kubrick's The Killing. Here. however. the setting is the Le Mans 24-hour motorcycle race. the goal a six million franc heist. More interesting for its buffery than its thriller qualities. See review. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I 2001: A Space Odyssey (U) (Stanley Kubrick. US/UK. 1968) Keir Dullea. Gary Lockwood. 141 mins. Celebrated visionary epic about the history and future of the human race. superbly crafted and directed by Kubrick. Seagal returns as former Navy SEAL and gounuet chef Casey Ryback. this time finding himself taken hostage on a train by a mad computer genius and a bunch of mercenaries. Bogosian is a totally charismatic nutter. who has captured a secret satellite with
explosive powers and has set his sights on Washington. so it's up to our hero to save the free world. The soft-spoken Seagal is no great actor. but the film has plenty of action. and a satisfyingly explosive climax. Delivers the goods. Edinburgh: UC1.
I Unstrung Heroes (PG) (Diane Keaton. US. 1995) Andie MacDowell. John Tunurro. Nathan Watt. 95 mins. Set in the early 60s. Keaton's feature debut as director is shot in sentimentally faded tones and is peopled by offobeat eccentrics. MacDowell is the Jewish wife who comes down with cancer. Tunurro her emotionally useless husband. Watt the isolated
kid who's confused by his mother's ‘secret'
illness. but who finds solace with his wacky uncles. It's too goofy to really capture the underlying loneliness of life. See review. Eidnbutgh: Cameo.
I The Usual Suspects (18) (Bryan Singer. US. 1995) Gabriel Byme. Kevin Spacey. Stephen Baldwin. 106 mins. There's a good sense of noir fataiism hanging over The Usual Strspr't‘ls‘. which is guessing game cincnta at its best. A perfectly matched team of crooks discover that their chance meeting wasn't so random after all: they're being used in an intricate vendetta by legendary gangster boss Keyser Sose. So stylish. it sends a tingle down the spine: but the ludicrous use of Pete Postletwaite's character almost undermines it all. Glasgow: Odeon. (Edinburgh: Odeon. Central: MacRobert. Strathclyde: Odeon Ayr.
I les Visiteurs (PG) (Jean-Marie Poire. France. 1993) Christian Clavier. Jean Reno. Valerie Lemercier. 105 mins. In a sleazy South American shanty town four equally sleazy desperadoes agree to drive a couple of truckloads of nitro-glycerine across the mountains. I 1'13th (12) (Kevin Reynolds. US. 1995) Kevin Costner. Dennis Hopper. Jeanne Tripplehorn. 135 mins. Forget all the pre~ judgemental hype about a production disaster: this is adventure on an immense scale. The polar ice caps have melted and society survives on man-made atolls. A bunch of biker-like pirates stonu one of these floating fortresses to kidnap a young girl whose back shows a tattooed map to the mythical Dryland. Only The Mariner (Costner) can save her from the clutches of self- styled tyrannical messiah. The Deacon (Hopper). The action set-pieces are amongst the most spectacular ever put on film. Edinburgh: Cameo. I When Night is Falling ( 15) (Patricia Rozema. Canada. 199-1) Pascale Bussieres. Rachel Crawford. Henry Czerny. 93 mins. A strongly Christian woman finds herself seduced by the relaxed and refreshingly libertine world of a female performance magician whom she meets by Chance. Rozema (I Heart] The Mermaids Singing) manages something more than a homoerotic take on the traditional love-triangle plot by incorporating wider themes of faith and courage. but the film is a little too studied and dispassionate. even if it is intelligent and poetic. Glasgow: GFT.

A railway station ticket-seller rescues the man of her dreams from an oncoming train. and is mistaken by his family for his fiancee while he is in a coma. A warm. somewhat sentimental comedy in which true love is pitted against romantic idealism in safe Hollywood fashion. Bullock can'ies her first starring role with an easy charm. Edinburgh: Cameo.
