The trio — pianist Mikhail Alperin. horn player Arkady Shilkloper. and singer Sergey Starostin - have not had the best of luck playing in Scotland. with one concert cancelled on the night. and another postponed for visa reasons. All is now sorted out. however. and as they proved when they did make it. they are one of the most exciting and refreshing bands to come our way in a long time. Their grafting together ofjaz‘z. folk and even classical sources into a unique and hugely inventive new growth provides not only great. tmpredictable music-making. but also equally great fttn.

Saxophonist Russell Cowieson has emerged as one of the leading young musicians in the country. and the chance to follow his continuing development as a well-rounded contemporary bop player and composer has been a distinct pleasure. His front-line partnership with trumpeter Colin Steele verges on the telepathic. Add pianist Brian Kellock. an asset to any band. and the rhythm section of Gary Fimister and Paddy Flaherty. and you have the makings of a top-notch outfit.

availability). Singer and pianist Mose Allison is one of those musicians who . seems to attract a ‘legendary‘ tag before
his name almost automatically these days. btlt he has done more than most to earn it. He is not what you would call a frequent visitor to Scotland (although that is part ol the mystique in itself). but his laconic. laid-back style has had a powerful influence on a couple of generations of both jazz and blues performers.
