I Farinelli (15) (Gerard Corbiart. France/Belgium. I994) Stefano Dionisi. Enrico Lo Verso. Jeroen Krabbe. I 10mins. Biographical details. period splendour and a fictionalised narrative combine for an account of the life of 18th century castrato Carlo Broschi. Dependent on ltis brother‘s music for his stardom (while his brother is dependent on him for an outlet for his compositions). his main desire is to sing the tttore emotional music of llandel rather than the custom-written ornamental ditties his fans love. Ornate costumes. arresting vocal set pieces and a strong dramatic undercurrent make this a feast for the eyes attd ears that doesn't ignore the mind. See review. Glasgow: GET. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Flaming Eats ( 18) (Attgela Ilans Schierl. Austria) A feature-length lesbian film. described by the San Francisco Bay Guardian as ‘a dystopian vision of the 28th Century' which ‘brings together a free-wheeling pyrontaniac. a haunted necrornaniac. a vengeful cartoonist and rough Iesbians'. The perfect rtigltt ottt. we reckon. Day membership for the Glasgow Filttt & Video Workshop cart be purcltased on the day. Glasgow: Glasgow Filrtt artd Video Workshop. I The Fountainhead (PG) (King Vidor. US. 1949) Gary Cooper. Patricia Neal. Rayrttortd Massey. 11-1 mitts. A real oddity this. Cooper plays art upstanding architect at odds with the commercialism personified itt the money men around hint. who eventually blows up a building that doesn‘t fit his viewpoint. Based (uncomfortably) on Aytt Rand's novel. the film struggles to achieve its expressionistic syntbolisnt. although sortie of the visuals are entertainingly bizarre. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I French Kiss ( 12) (Lawrence Kasdan. US. 1995) Meg Ryan. Kevin Kline. Jean Reno. 111 rttitts. When her fiance skips off with a French beauty while on a Parisian business trip. The script is mediocre. the plot formulaic. the middle sags. arid the two stars don’t rrtuster the necessary chemistry to make it work as a romance. See preview attd review. General release. I Fun ( l8) (Rafal Zielirtski. US/Can. 1994) Alicia Witt. Renee Humphrey. William R. Moses. 105 rttitts. Two young teenage girls meet on a roadside. become firm friertds and murder an old woman before evening. Yes. another case history of a senseless crime. another bleak portrait of our morally bankrupt society. but Fun is tttore distanced and thought-provoking than Heaven/y Creatures. The actresses create evasive. unknowable and cornpellingly real characters. Strathclyde: East Kilbride Arts Centre.

I The Gay Divorcee (U) (Mark Sartdriclt. US. 1934) Fred Astaire. Ginger Rogers. Alice Brady. 104 rttins. Cole Porter's stage hit became the real launching pad for the Fred 'n' Ginger partnership. surrounding their graceful routines with some brash. funrty moments. Mistaken identity abounds when Rogers heads to an English seaside resort in order to behave in a manrter that will give grounds for her divorce. The stand-out number is ‘The Continental'. but don't forget ‘Night And Day'. Glasgow: GFT. I Haunted (15) (Lewis Gilbert. UK/US. I995) Aidan Quinn. Kate Beckinsale. Anthony Andrews. 110 mins. A parapsychologist (Quinn). haunted by the childhood death of his sister. is drawn into the affairs of three siblings in a large country house. I Jade ( 18) (William Friedkin. IFS. 1995) David Caruso. Linda Fiot'entino. (‘hazz Palntinteri. A bloody murder. art alluring worttart with a dotrble iderttity. a detective seduced by the vatnp he‘s investigating it's another script by Joe Eszterhas which. like Basic Instinct arid Sliver. distracts the audience from the ludicrous plot with sleazy visual exotica. Add director I‘riedkin. master of the police procedural (The French Connection) and the result is a savagely stupid rttovie ftrll of overactirtg. See review. Glasgow: Grosvenor. MGMs. All I'Cls.

I Jefferson In Paris ( 12) (Jatttes Ivory. t‘s. 1995) Nick Nolte. Greta Scacclti.’1'handie Newtort. I40 mitts.
