PARTY 0"!
Two years is a very, very long time in club land, especially in Edinburgh, 3 city where clubs come and go faster than most. Yip Yap sold out on its first night and the queues get longer by the week, with hundreds locked out by midnight.
Adam, one half of the publicity-shy promotion team explains: ‘Yip Yap is basically an ordinary club.’ (Tell that to the 500 people whose Saturday nights depend on it). ‘We’ve just been lucky in that we found a gap in Edinburgh and managed to keep it going for so long. There’s no one, specific reason why the club is so popular - it’s more a mixture of things, from the right DJs, the right crowd and the right venue down to the way the sound system has been put together.’
But, of course, it’s not as simple as that. This is the club that bravely bucked the trend to book the ‘big name’ DJs who dominated the nation’s nightspots, at a time when the words ‘special guest DJ’ meant loadsamoney for greedy promoters. This is the club who had the foresight and the faith to pluck two local DJs out of relative regional obscurity and let them control the night. This is also the club with (believe it or not) no attitude.
‘We’ve always believed that Yip Yap should be about having a good night out. Nothing more, nothing less,’ says
Iliilllflfl
Stewart, the less shy half of the promotion team. ‘We originally set out to provide people with a club they could rely on, somewhere they could hear consistently good music from [Us who knew the crowd intimately and we’ve pretty much stuck to that. We could get loads of guest DJs in every week but they tend to care more about the money than the punters. If we do book someone, it’s for the occasional one-off like a birthday or just to keep people on their toes.’
Last words from resident DJ Gareth Sommerville: ‘l’ve been asked to play at clubs all over the country but nothing comes remotely close to Yip Yap. It’s a joy to play there. I wouldn’t give it up for the world.’
Neither would we. Long may it continue. (Jim Byers)
