As Scottish artist John Bellany reached the big 50, Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery celebrated his birthday with a major exhibition A long Night’s Journey Into Day. It followed a harrowing period in Bellany’s life, when he had undergone a liver transplant. The show charted the evolution of his work from 1972, when it was marked by an obsession with death, guilt and sin, through to the post-transplant
v lazarus paintings, celebrating his second chance AR to live.

The Traverse moved from its 100-seat studio in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket to the first purpose-built theatre in the company’s 30-year history. Its new home lacked the beatnik appeal of its former abode — the smell of Victoria Street restaurants, the cries of passing ghost tours and a dodgy roof, but the new Traverse had much more to offer: two theatres with a total seating capacity of 350, a spacious bar and a high-tech air-conditioning system. The theatre was baptised with a production of Michele Celeste’s Columbus: Blooding the Ocean, aptly marking the West’s so-called discovery of the New World.

Fife miner’s son and one-time punk rocker- turned actor, writer, poet and TV presenter, Richard Jobson fronted Channel 4’s Men Talk. The series was designed to hang men’s attitudes to sex, their own bodies, women and their bodies, on the line.
