I The lluvv Weldon Memorial Lecture (BBC2) 7.15--8pm. Former BBCl controller and pioneer of sport television Sir Paul Fox looks at the effect cameras have had on sport and considers the way satellite and cable channels are colonising coverage of major sporting events.

I One Night Stand (Channel 4) 9—9.30pm. American stand-up Ellen DeGeneres takes a night off from her sitcom. so we get highlights from her live show instead.
I Dangerfield (BBC 1) 9.3()—I0.25pm. Former Casualty consultant Nigel Le Vaillant returns as the GP who moonlights as a police surgeon in a series which straddles two popular drama genres. in the first episode. Dangerfield is called to certify the suspicious drowning of another doctor.
I Shooting Stars (BBC2) 9.30—10pm. Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer are called on to inject some irony as hosts of a rather tired sounding celeb quiz. with team captains Mark Lamarr and Ulrika Jonsson. I Friends (Channel 4) 9.30—10pm. Ross is mistaken for a male prostitute in this American sitcom.
I Room 101 (BBC2) lO—IO.30pin. Nick Hancock talks to Jimmy Tarbuck about his pet hates.
I Frasier (Channel 4) l()—l().30pin. Martin is still trying to solve a murder after twenty years and Frasier has an unusual theory about the culprit.
I Whose Line Is It Anyway? (Channel 4) 10.30—1 1.05pm. Tony Slattery and Mike McShane join Clive Anderson for the last in the series of the improv comedy show. I Passengers (Channel 4)
l 1.05—1 1.55pm. Brno/(side pin-up Anna Friel talks about her future. plus a report on a model agency which only has H1V+ models on its books.
I Mondo Rosso (BBC2) 11.20—11.55pm. New chat show fronted by Jonathan Ross who invites guests to share his love of trashy B-movies with clips and some of the stars themselves. Tonight guest reviewer Eddie lzzard reveals the secrets of low-budget movie monsters.

I Working All llours (BBC2) 7.20—9.05pm. First of a two-part investigation into the British labour market and workplace practices.
I Casualty (BBCl) 8.05—8.55pm. Baz finally takes the job as registrar after weeks of havering. while the new PR officer is having a tough time.
I The Boss (BBC2) 8.05—8.55pm. New documentary series based on video diaries by six bosses who talk about the price they pay for prestige and power. First up is Jan Fletcher. head of a £45 million business empire which is still expanding. who takes the camera with her to board meetings and industry dinners.
I local Hero (Channel 4) SOS-10.05pm. Bill Forsyth‘s brilliant comedy about a Texas oil tycoon who gets all New Age in
the Highlands. which arguably fathered the current mini-boom in Scottish filmmaking.
I Planes, Trains and Automobiles (BBC1)9.15—10.4Spm. Steve Martin and John Candy are the ill-matched travelling companions in John Hughes's brilliant comedy about an advertising executive‘s desperate attempts to get home for Thanksgiving.
I Loved Up (BBC2) 9.30—10.4()pm. Another from the Love Bites season. this is the story of two young lovers set against the background of the rave scene.
I Basic Instinct (Scottish) l()pm—12.15ain. ‘Erotic‘ thriller with Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone as cop and murder suspect who become sexually entangled.
I Just For laughs (Channel 4) l().05—l().45pm. First of six compilations filmed at the Montreal Comedy Festival. featuring Frank Skinner. Eddie lzzard and hot American stand-up Richard Leni.
I Dyke TV (Channel 4) 10.45pm—2. 10am. More from Channel 4's season of lesbian nights. which looks this way: My Mother is an Alien ( 10.45—l 1.25pm) Documentary about the first generation of adults to be brought up by ‘out' lesbians. Body of a Poet: A Tribute to Audre lorde (11.25—11.55pm) Film about the black lesbian poet who died in 1992 and had been out since the 50s when attitudes to homosexuality in America were very different. (l 1.55pm—12.30am) Film about about the remarkable life-long friendship between two women — one lesbian. one straight. both Jewish. Fresh Kill (12.30-l.55am) Futuristic movie made by New York video artist Shu Lea Cheang about a city where sexual and racial orientation barriers have disappeared. Double Entente
( 1.55—2. 10am) A short drama about a woman who finds herselfalone in a bar. in a tale of temptation and seduction.
I The Stand Up Show (BBCl)
1 l.5()pm-12.30am. Highlights of the Open Mic awards from Edinburgh hosted by Boothby Graffoe. with competing comedians including Lee Mack and Viv Gee.
SUNDAY 24
I Equinox (Channel 4) 7—8pm. Coinciding with National Safety Week. this science documentary looks at how a greater understanding of the physical laws of fire has led to improved fire-fighting techniques. includes spectacular footage shot inside the heart of raging fires.
I Heartbeat (Scottish) 7.30—8.30pm. Nick is struggling to combine fatherhood and full time policing.
I Violent Times (Channel 4) 8—9.30pm. Start of a new two-week season about violence in modern Britain (see preview). This programme looks at four crimes committed since the war which have heightened concern about violence, including the Notting Hill riots of 1958 and the Yorkshire Ripper’s late-70s reign of terror.
I Pride and Prejudice (BBCl) 9—9.50pm. First episode of Andrew Davies‘s lavish adaptation of the Jane Austen classic. See preview. (Repeated on Saturdays at 6.10pm.)
I The Death of Yugoslavia (BBC2)
9. 10— 10pm. This excellent documentary series continues with revelations of new evidence that Serb leader Slobodan Milosovic personally ordered the ethnic cleansers into Bosnia as the war began. I Carl lliaasens’s Miami (Channel 4) 9.30—10pm. Thriller writer and Miami Herald columnist Carl Hiaasen takes us on a guided tour through a side of his city the Florida tourist board underplays. in a tale of guns. drugs and violence.
I Misery (Channel 4) 9.30—10pm. Rob Reiner‘s excellent thriller stars Kathy Bates who holds her favourite author James Caan hostage after he is crippled in a car crash.

I Space Precinct (BBC2) 6-6.45pm. After its satellite run. Gerry Anderson. flesh and blood sci-fi starts up on the BBC. Basically. it‘s a cop show with aliens but entertaining with it.
I Get It On (BBC2) 7—7.3()pm. Carol Smillie has fashion tips for women over a size 12. plus a look at the life of a catwalk photographer.
I One for the Road (Channel 4) 8—8.30pm. Alan Davies sends his ex- flatmates a tape from the Alps where he‘s having a high old time. in this video diary- style comedy.
I The X Files (BBC2) 9—9.45pm. When a former FBI agent who claims that he was abducted by aliens starts taking hostages. Fox Mulder is called in to investigate.
I Alien 3 (Scottish) 9—1 1.45pm (including News at Ten) First showing for this sequel to the sci-fi classic with Sigourney Weaver as Ripley who is still in pursuit of the alien.
I Cutting Edge (Channel 4) 9—10pm. For the Battered Britain season. Cutting Edge looks at how a child psychiatrist helps children get over the trauma ofwitnessing family violence. including an adult woman who may have repressed the memory of seeing her father murder her mother as a child.
I Michael Moore’s TV ilation (BBC2) 9.45—10.30pm. More from Moore’s excellent investigative journalism/comedy hybrid with American comedian Steve Wright‘s look at the world of advertising jingle writers.
I Homicide - Lite on the Streets (Channel 4) 10—1 1.05pm. Russen's former partner returns to the squad. but she discovers he is a wife beater.
I Billy Connolly’s World Tour of Scotland (BBCl) 10.10—10.40pm. The Big Yin visits the Wallace Monument in this repeated travelogue.
I omnibus (BBC 1) 10.40—l 1.30pm. Documentary about the writing and marketing of Robert Harris’s follow-up to Fatherland. Enigma, about the code- cracking operation during World War 11.
TUESDAY 26
I Island Race (BBCl) 7—7.30pm. John McCarthy and Sandi Toksvig continue their ocean-going adventure in the Outer Hebrides.
I Dear Dilemma (BBC2) 7.10—7.30pm. New youth series presented by Radio 1 jockess Lisa l'Anson which dramatises real-life teen crises before canvassing the opinions of a celebrity panel. Mica Paris and Jarvis Cocker are the agony aunts for a day.
I Soldier, Soldier (Scottish) 9—lOpm. Company B are on manoeuvres in Australia when the patrol vehicle crashes in a dust storm in this army drama.
I When the Fighting Starts (Channel 4) 9—10pm. Documentary following the aftermath of three assaults on young men which were captured on security cameras. I The Pope Must Die (Channel 4)
10—1 1.55pm. Daft comedy with Robbie Coltrane as a priest who tackles Vatican corruption after being mistakenly elected as Pope.
WEDNESDAY 27
I Chart Bite (Scottish) 6.55-7.20pm. The new Scottish chart revealed by Mari and Ewan. I Absoluter Animals (Channel 4) 8.30-9pm. Former Ward presenter Dani Behr presents another edition of this animal-related magazine programme. with a look at the campaign to liberate the whale star of Free Willy. I Degrees of Error (BBC2) 9—l0pm. While the medical profession closes ranks against her. Anna continues her research into the long-term effects of tranquillisers in this doctor drama with an ethical sub- text. I Frontline (Channel 4) 9-9.45pm. An organic farmer argues that chemical pesticides are implicated in the spread of mad cow disease.
I Smith and Jones (BBC 1) 9.30—10pm. More double-act comedy from Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones, with sketches and another of their famous head-to-heads.
I Northern Exposure (Channel 4) l0—lO.55pm. Joel‘s parents make the trip to Alaska for a bit of family soul- searching.
I The Long Johns (Channel 4)
10.55-1 1.05pm. More deadpan humour in another spoof interview set-up.
I The Spin (BBC2) 11.15—1 1.55pm. John Sweeney presents another edition of the media show.
I Chapter and Verse (Channel 4) midnight—12.30am. Documentary for the Battered Britain season about Paul John Ferris, who is regarded by some as the natural heir to Glasgow gangster Arthur Thompson‘s criminal empire. ‘If anyone was born into crime it was me - crime is in my blood.’ Fern's tells John McVicar. I A led and Tvvo lloughts (Channel 4) 12.30—2.40am. Peter Greenaway‘s bizarre but compelling film set in a European 200 where a man records the decay of dead animals while his brother sets the live ones free.
THURSDAY 28
I Deep Space Nine (BBC2) 6—7.30pm. Extended first episode of this Star Trek spin-off set on a distant outpost of the final frontier.
I The Vision Thing (Channel 4) 8—8.30pm. Sheena McDonald interviews philosopher and law professor Ronald Dworkin about his attempt to create a moral framework we can use to tackle modern ethical problems such as abortion. euthanasia and genetic engineering.
I Till Death Do Us Part (Channel 4) 9—9.45pm. Documentary about the relatively light sentences some men receive after killing their partners by pleading guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter.
I Scotland Yard (Scottish) 9.30—10pm. A new series which follows the work of the Met tonight captures the Flying Squad's high-speed pursuit of a gang of armed robbers.
