ART/PERFORMANCE
DARK INTENTIONS
Dark Lights at Tramway aims to bring performing and visual artists together in Scotland. The visual arts programme includes four new commissions from artists based in Glasgow. Tramway’s Charles Esche talks about his hopes for this new season:
‘To a degree we listen to responses all the time but I think the arguments against us concerning Trust were actually pretty weak.
‘Our job is to get people to overcome a lack of imagination about art. Rather than confirming the situation as it exists, our role is to provide a platform for alternative ways of thinking. We do think about the audience but we are not entirely audience led. Tramway is a space where people can think and give their imaginations freedom. Such spaces need to be defended because they are very important culturally.

innovative and ingenious artists in Europe and that puts us in a privileged position. We want the people in Glasgow who are not artists to come with an open mind and ask themselves questions.
‘The linking of visual arts with performance in Dark Lights came from the artists themselves. It wasn’t dreamed up by administrators who thought it would be a good idea to throw some dancers in with some painters, that would be disastrous. It seems that artists are finding the divisions between disciplines less and less necessary and there’s a demand for spaces that don’t feel precious about their particular art forms.’ (Gill Roth)
