BOUNDING AROUND AT THE EVENT Ill
It might be the hottest summer since records began, but Paul ludford is still diligently tipping his hat to the sun gods. 0n the first weekend in September he will be responsible for the biggest dance party ever held in Scotland: Equinox, The Event III, which will be held outside at the Royal Highland Showground, lngliston.
Bigger than any paying event at the Edinburgh Festival, Equinox offers twenty hours of serious partying. Thirty-seven NS and Ms have been booked to entertain crowds of up to 16,000, and it will be more of a carnival atmosphere than your usual rave, if there is anything ‘usual‘ about Equinox in the first place.
‘Walking around the site last year it became very apparent that there were a lot of people who were not just there for the music,’ says Paul Ludford, who runs Rezerection. And, like the best on, ludford has been listening to what the punters want: ‘I’ve increased the fairground by 50 per cent and am bringing in a lot more attractions. Obviously it’s longer than last year, so there will be things going on throughout the day and night.’
Which means parachute displays, a promenading salsa band, Mystic Meg (yes, reallyl), lazer duelling in the night sky and, if the civil aviation authority give clearance, a fireworks display from the folk who are responsible for the Festival fireworks.
Then there’s the music. Two marquees, offering everything from the jungle of local lad Km: to Lenny Dee’s American hardcore; from Tom Wilson’s bouncy tartan techno to the underground sounds of the likes of
Lady Barbarella: France’s answer to Jon Pleased Wimmin Joey Beltram, Dave Angel, Jeff Mills and Dave Clarke.
Which is more music than you can hope to shake a lightstick at. There should be something for everyone. As Tasha of the Killer Pussies, making her Scottish debut, says: ‘It is important to take people on a journey with new records, but it is also nice to give them something that they can relate to.’ (Thom Dibdin)
