PHOTOGRAPHY TOY TOWN
The woman in David Levlnthal’s photograph stands bikini-clad, a la Betty Grable. Her body perfectly proportioned, her skin flawless. But there’s something about those breasts, that burn, that just doesn’t ring true. Oh yes, that’s it, they’re plastic. In fact, she’s all plastic. She’s a doll - but she could easin have been a Baywatch babe — couldn’t she?
Levinthal first emerged in the 1980s when, like others of his generation, he began to push forward the frontiers of photography. Spanning ten years, all 50 photos on show at Street Level use dolls as their subjects, but being plastic and inanimate doesn’t make them any less powerful, it merely shifts the emphasis. The mythical America delivered to the rest of the world via Hollywood seems rather less believable when the heroic cowboy in the ‘Wild West’ series and curvaceous model in ‘American Beauties’ are nothing but takes. Equally, the absurdity of the Playboy centrefold is heightened in ‘Desire’ because she’s simply not real.
The photograph’s common link is the manipulation of light and focus. By blurring an image, our faith in it is shaken, not only undermining stereotypes and values, but lending weight to that which we can see. In ‘Wild West’, a Butch Cassidy-style

shoot-out is pictured, the only thing in focus however, is the hand holding the cowboy’s gun.
Levinthal’s love of film noir and the darker side of life is clear. In ‘Modern Bomance’, a woman lies naked on a bed, while the bulky figure of a man bathed in shadow stands ominously by her side. The oppressive/submissive feel is no less disturbing because they’re dolls. likewise ‘Mein Kampf’, a powerful new series based on the Holocaust, shows a woman holding a baby while a Nazi soldier stands, gun poised, to shoot her in the back. Kids stuff it ain’t. (Kelly McMenamin)
