FESTIVAL CLUBBING HIGHLIGHTS
Jon Pleased Wlmmln
Confused after that last absurdist puppet theatre interpretation of vintage Crossroads? Fed up with mime artists enacting War And Peace - the fifteen minute version — on the corner of every street? Need respite from the stampeding crowds of luvvies? Or simply need to lose it? Well it should come as no surprise that the best way to do it comes after 11pm and doesn’t involve sitting in a musty community
centre for three hours.
As the Fringe heads into overdrive, the best bet is to head to Edinburgh’s finest nightspots and over the next three weeks you’ll find some of the best jocks in the world arriving at the same conclusion.
House highlights first: On a hardbag tip, Boy George returns to Edinburgh
3 on Thurs 17 Aug to play Bluefest at
The Calton. Also on 17 Aug, Jon Pleased Wimmin sashays into town to
glam it up at Colours, The Vaults.
Garage purists should head for Colours (the Vaults) on 26 Aug when Barbara Tucker sings live and London legend Paul ’Trouble’ Anderson works the technics. Hacienda man Graeme Park plays Colours on 31 Aug.
Techno wise, there’s plenty to get excited about too: Pure’s fifth birthday on 11 Aug (at The Venue) and their Glasgow Barrowland bash on 19 Aug with Derrick May, Armando, Speedy J and Jake Slazenger (tickets from TDCTA; buses going from Edinburgh). Andy Weatherall plays Pure on 25 Aug and Chicago man of the moment Derrick Carter on 8 Sept. On a more ambient/avant-garde note, watch out for a twelve-hour festival of electronic music on 3 Sept at Edinburgh College Of Art featuring the likes of ‘Biiirk legal-wrangle’ phone terrorist Scanner, Muslimgauze and Cristian Vogel, and ex Black Dog duo Plaid lay it down live at The Venue on 23 Aug.
Trip hop types have plenty to look forward to as well, this festival. Expect a formidable dub-reverb/ electro/breakbeat style soundclash when .l Saul Kane (of Depth Charge) hits Squid at La Belle Angele on 17 Aug, they also have Andy Smith, DJ with Portishead on 24 Aug. Last but not least, drum and bass fans should get down to Street Knowledge, The Venue on 31 Aug, where Coventry hardcore maestro hits the deck along with Scottish jungle dons KMC and Kid.
And that’s not to mention Easy Listening shindig Indigo and the ever popular Club Latino at The Assembly Rooms. Make it round this lot and you’ll soon forget the Festival ever existed. (Bethan Cole)
