‘What we’re mainly known for is the percussion build up,‘ reasons house producer Bay line. ‘We lust keep on building drums, sampling new sounds and working them in until by the end, our tracks are a mass of drum programming and we’re like “that’s too much!”.
Welcome to the new spirit of house: fierce, trippy, maximalist and totally unpredictable, and epitomised by the recent output of British label Sllp ’n’ Slide and producers like flew York’s lioc and Kate. Yet Boc and Kato are no newcomers, they’ve been around for some time, carefully honing their own off-kilter percussive strain of sensual house. Recent releases like ‘Alrlght’ (actually two years old) and their mix of Fire Island’s ‘If You Should lleed A Friend’ have rooted them more firmly in the British consciousness, but the pair actually met eight years ago In 1987, two up-and-coming MS from Queens who used to bump Into each other record shopping.
‘We were both DJing on different sides of the town,’ elaborates Juan Kate, in a nasal drawl that’s NYC through and through. ‘Anyway, he played keyboards and would bring me
tracks and remixes he’d done and I’d play them in my club.’ Around the same time Juan himself was working in Arthur Baker’s old Shakedown studios (as was a then unknown Junior Vasquez), eventually he and Ray iloc began making tracks. ‘We got tired of shopping them around record labels and set up our own record label, Digital Dungeon.’
From first release ‘The Kings From Queens EP’, Roc and Kate’s deep, bumping garage style has garnered quiet devotion from house DJs around the planet. ‘We take influences from everybody - jungle, house, techno, whatever, and apply it to what we do,’ says Juan.
‘But our vibe is never the same,’ asserts flay who produces mainstream pop and commercial ballads as well as house. DJing sets are equally unpredictable, recent spots have seen the pair cut specially customised acetates dedicated to the club they’re playing at and using four decks. ‘We try to give a show - not just spin our own product,’ concludes Bay.
