immortallsing, Charlie Parker’s death 40 years ago was metaphorically negated on the subway walls. It was prophetic enough — his own recordings kept his music alive, while his inlluence has permeated a zillion alto solos, and not always tor the better. The two altoists who lead this tribute to Bird’s imperishable legacy, Phil Woods and Peter King, have taken on his message, but have absorbed it within their own distinctive musical voices, and that is the greatest tribute or all.
