When Paul Hoenigman is not selling kitchens he is Scotland’s finest exponent of the noble art of fencing. Paul is a Commonwealth team gold medallist and individual silver
. medallist at the sabre, one of the three ‘weapons’ in fencing - the
others being the épée and the foil. The
aim of the game is to outscore your opponent: one point for each hit. There are no points for being graceful, mental and physical prowess are far more important.
‘lt’s been called a blind man’s game of chess, because the key to winning is being calm and collected,‘ explains the 25-year-old. ‘You have to think what your opponent is going to do and counteract it. It’s quite psychological, so you’ve got to be pretty strong mentally. You’ve also got to be really fit. I do the sabre which is the most aggressive weapon. It contains a lot of quick movements, so I do a lot of
swimming, sprinting and weights to
stay in top gear.’
Even though Scotland boasts champions, fencing gets a lot less media coverage here than it does on the Continent. That could be because
. the game may be seen as a public
i equal. We do have good fun beating
‘ The Scottish Fencing Championships f take place at the Magnum Centre,
school sport, but Paul refutes this:
‘It can be televisual but the Scottish media are not willing to take a gamble on anything that isn’t rugby or football. I think the problem is that it is perceived as elitist, but I’d actually I say that 75 per cent of our top competitors come from working class backgrounds. In Italy, France and Hungary fencing is huge: in Germany it is their most popular indoor sport.’
Paul is avidly looking towards qualifying for the Olympics in Atlanta next year, but he also enjoys the Scottish scene where he and the other two Commonwealth gold medallists, his brother Michael Hoenigman and Rory Cowan, dominate the game.
‘A lot of finals are between me and my brother. He used to be number one but I got a bit peeved at that and worked a little bit harder and got some good breaks. It’s never a foregone conclusion that I will win; Rory, Michael and I are all pretty
each other up though.‘ (Philip Oorward)
