: associated with one man. 0.! Jazz is ' Club Havana personified. He doesn’t
get a PR team to fly for him or get a flunky to warm up the night, he does everything himself. His bomber iacket carries the Havana logo, unzipped to show off his Havana Mardi Cras T-shirt
i and he’s never without a bundle of
flyers for one of his events.
With his unending passion for Latin music and his infectious belief in the club, Jazz has created an event that is the hottest night Glasgow has to offer with swinging lambada dresses and the dirtiest of dancing. It’s like squeezing a month’s holiday into one night.
He started 0Jing in the acid house
scene, working in Tin Pan Alley and Joe Paparazzi. The dance scene couldn’t hold his attention for very long though and gradually he would drop more and more of the Latin tracks he had been listening to at home into his set. ‘l’d get fed up with all the records sounding the same, whereas with Latin you know it’s real musicians and percussion. The adrenalin flows and you can feel the love that’s gone into the instruments to make the music.’ Jazz wanted to create the kind of club that he and his friends could go to and not feel intimidated. The only thing intimidating about the club are the queues that start hours before the doors open.
To feed the Havana hunger, Janis organising an immense summer extravaganza: The Club Havana Mardi Cras, his biggest night yet, bringing the uplifting sound of samba, rumba, merengue, salsa, lambada and flamenco to a wider audience. With 1000 tickets selling fast and instructions on the flyer stipulating that everyone must come dressed as Carmen Miranda, the night is looking like a bit of a storrner.
As Jan heads to Spain this summer to DJ in Madrid and Barcelona it’ll be the last we see of Havana until the Autumn. So pop a pineapple on your head and get dancing. (Hory Weller) The Club Havana Mardi tires is at the Tunnel on Sun 25.
