PAINTING FAR HORIZONS
Earth, sea and air. Paint, pencil, shellac. In her first solo show, Susan Woods re-creates Genesis Chapter One
in full colour. The formal elements of
line, depth and hue shift and slide like the earth’s crust, as they force themselves into being. These images -
inspired by the views from her leith
shorefront home - dwell on the production of the horizon. Woods aims to suggest, engulfing the viewer in sensuous contemplations. Structure is provided in the compositions by the presence of black pencilled monoliths which eerily appear, locking the various horizons into cruciform order. The works on board, eighteen small units of 9" x 9" installed as Tints and Tones, and four large - Blue, Red, Yellow and Grey, begin to take off but are often curtailed by the flattening

presence of the gessoed board underneath. Conversely, the works on paper, especially Red Sketch, done in oil pastel, have a deep softness which is continuous. Here, feeling takes over from its formal components and the eye sets off into the oceanic. These works have some of the quality of (Milan Redon, especially where the drawing line is allowed to surmount the mirage-like veils of colour. Woods, who started as a graphic artist, has been painting at Citizens’ Studios for the last six years. flew Paintings show the continuing development of a distinct, stronger presence in her work that clearly transcends her illustrative and technical adeptness.
